It will be lanch in june 2006 in 2D version, and in 2007 for the 3D version.
Look this video :
http://billaut.typepad.com/jm/2006/04/connaissezvous__2.html
It's in French, but look the screen, it's really good... and FREE.

In France, Google Earth has a big contestant...

If the site can't handle the load, it's not going to be much of a race.

I've seen this on tv and it looks indeed realy good. It goes a lot further than Google earth does. I don't think load can be a problem, if the thing is scalable one has only to add extra capacity.

In less than 24 hours, geoportail.fr received more than 5 millions users...

But yes, the resolution is really better than Google. Look a screenshot of my school on Google Earth vs Geoportail :

Art-One > I just discovered that in english it exists an expression for my school : "University Institute of Technology". ^^

/pd > the link to the IGN picture doesn't work anymore, sorry.
I can zoom more, but the picture doesn't change, if I zoom too much I could see the pixels. Unfortunately the altitude is not mentionned.
But, the width of the IGN picture (= the width of the red rectangle on the Google Earth screenshoot) measure about 150 meters. The resolution must be 50 centimers by pixel (not sure for the area of my University), really better than Google Earth.
I will search for the information.

Why it is toooooooo long to load ?

SInce its launch, geoportail.fr received (or tried to received) more than 13 MILLIONS of unique visitors.
Sometime it got 600 requests/querry by second
Woww...

I would to hack their "please wait" message by adding an Adsense ad :-D

The Italian "answer" to google maps is given by "paginegialle.it" (yellow pages) with a brand new "visual" search (beta)

http://visual.paginegialle.it/beta?cf=61&cb=0

using flash + navtech maps in collaboration with Alenia Spazio (a big space technology builder) also give a 3D view and a
" visual run " in some italian city , (like MS do in preview.local.live.com)
due to beta status server is sometime down or sloooooow.

just try , (gmaps are better)

You've killed Geoportail! You've ruined it.
