Do you guys know if applying for a patent is free? Also, have you guys seen the USPTO website(uspto.gov/)? It is horrible, really really horrible.

To file a patent it costs a lot, less if you are an individual:
uspto.gov/web/offices/ac/qs/op ...

Be warned that each step of the way there are more fees. Most patents go through numerous steps and each one can cost if there was a negative determination that you are trying to get around.
