removing Google as web default page?

Hello --

Some time ago I chose Google as my default page that opens when I login to the web.
Big mistake! Now I seem to be unable to remove it. I've tried the usual re-settings using "tools --> internet options" on Internet Explorer, as well as working through the Control screen in Windows. Not even changing the default to a Microsoft page seems to work...... Does anyone know how to delete Google as a www default page? Also, how has Google succeeded in taking control of my machine in this way? I regularly delete cookies, etc.
Thanks for your help!

I suppose you caught some kind of virus called "hijacker". It uses Google to deliver popups and the like. In any case, if "Set back settings to default" (paraphrased) and "Use default page" don't work, you may want to install AdAware and SpyBot and run them over your system:

Google certainly is not responsible for this behavior, unless your browser is broken.

Thanks for the note. It is very helpful. Now that you mention it, I recall a controversy over Google-delivered spyware. I think that was months ago.

Does google have a patch or something of that sort to clean out the problem ?

One strange symptom is that the virus, malware or whatever seems to survive clean-up sweeps.

I automatically sweep with the tools you mentioned and others. I'll now re-try some specific runs. By chance do you know the virus's technical name?

Thanks again!

My sister had a similar problem on her computer. The default page would always go back to a weird portal site, no matter how often you deleted it from the browser preferences. I can't recall if it was fixed after I ran AdAware and SpyBot, but that was of course my first action; afterwards, I ran an anti-hijacker exe. I don't know if it helps but you may want to try the following:

Both have been suggested on this Google Answers page:
