Very interesting.. I wonder how much functionality can online-excel application have. Does anyone else know about existing excel-type applications online?

From the New York Times:

Google executives said today that the program would make it possible for Internet users to upload two common spreadsheet and data formats, Excel and C.S.V. Once the data is on Google's Web servers, it will be possible for two or more people to simultaneously edit spreadsheet documents and chat about them using Google's instant messaging program.

The new service will be able to handle several hundred formulas used to manipulate data in Excel, but it will not handle more complex functions like Excel macros, said Jonathan Rochelle, the Google Spreadsheets product manager.

Why does this follow the Writely acquistion? Writely never had a spreadsheet function. I think the release of Google Word is more likely to come first.

I've already had to create a bookmarks folder with all the Google links I use every day. If Google keeps adding to their product list, they're going to have to come up with a better way for me to access all their stuff. Maybe a drop-down menu on the main Google page?

Maximo [PersonRank 0]

Do you think that this is a dummy signup? Other sources say that Spreadsheets is due to be released at 6AM...by which time? Could this just be a non-functioning signup? Because if you enter any gibberish into the box, it will still submit it. It doesn't check for the e-mail to be valid nor for it to be a google account.

I think people simply mention Google Writely (which is after all already a full-fledged Rich Text editor) because it's like "Google Excel" is following "Google Word" now in the Google Office package. And as to who's going to use it: whoever uses office products is a good target group. I mean, once you accept the paradigm that everything will move online, creating a Google Office is smart...

Randhir Reddy [PersonRank 1]

Thx Dan, for the first Screenshots.

I thnk this is gonna be a sure winner, been using Writely for a while now, and i thnk tht is all most of us need for word processing, without bells and whistles and its fast enough, very ajaxy and accessible everywhere with a net conn..

I thnk being Platform Neutral, these tools will find a wider acceptance and to top it, its absolutely Free.

I doubt it. Not in the short term anyway because it's a limited test – and if you could do that, it wouldn't be very limited... ;-)

BTW – the login page is obviously here (not that it's any good unless you've got an invite):

https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=wise

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

Although, having said that look at this...

<< How do I share a spreadsheet with other people?

Click on the "Show sharing options" link in the upper right area of your online spreadsheet. There, you can enter the email addresses of the people to either give "edit" or "view-only" access. You'll be prompted to send them an email with a link to the spreadsheet. They'll need to create or sign into an existing Google Account using the same email address in order to access the spreadsheet. Note that for now, you'll only be able to invite others using emails which are valid Google Accounts. >>

Excellent! This is great news. Do you think Google will offer an office package? (or just put it in Google pack?) And offer an enterprise version of this?

Also, how do you suppose Google will make money from writely and google spreadsheets? ads? or something else?

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

From RegisteredUser on Digg:
<<Google Spreadsheets isn't meant to replace Excel. It's definitely not for power users that require complex macros or equations. And it's definitely not for people that need a mission critical spreadsheet application. This is a simple spreadsheet app for simple usage. From my observations, the casual Excel user mainly uses spreadsheets to create lists in tabular form, or they use it to create a simple personal budget. This is the target audience for Google Spreadsheets.

Take another look at the screenshot. The sample spreadsheet they show is a game schedule for a little league team. See what I mean? For people that don't need the full power and capabilities of Excel, Google is offering a simple and free alternative.>>

* Google Notebook
* Google SketchUp
* Google AJAX Site Search
* Google Related Links
* Google Mars
* Google Page Creator

Pau: I'd say so. Back when Writely was pre-Google owned I had an email conversation with them regarding a spread-sheet app. At the time they were at the early stages of developing one.

I asked them about it again after Google bought them out – but of course they could only say 'no comment' :)

Google is directly competing with open source projects like OpenOffice and Sun's free StarOffice.

Google acquired Writely (word processing) and now has a spreadsheet. There was speculation last year that Google would partner with Sun to offer a version of StarOffice. Instead Google has decided to go its own way and compete with OpenOffice and StarOffice.

C/Net says "Google spreadsheets turns up heat on Excel" I don't think so. Microsoft Office is a powerful, industrial strength, client based, information worker productivity platform. Microsoft Office is moving beyond just being a collection of applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to being a server based application platform for ISVs. Lots of companies run their business on Excel spreadsheets. Now creative start-ups are using Office as a front end User Interface to a whole variety of business applications.

I wrote a blog on this subject today http://dondodge.typepad.com/the_next_big_thing/2006/06/google_competin.html

Things I notice:

You cant DRAG formulas.
When you enter stuff into the boxes the blue bit extends over the egd of the box (awkward looking).
When you merge cells you can only do it horizontally. Cells displaced vertically from each other can not be merged.
The thing they have done at the top with the different tabs for formatting / formulas etc is interesting.
CTRL + C etc did NOT work for copying. You had to use the button at the top.
Copying & pasting formulas did update them intelligently (i.e. the row number changed etc).

Gmail used to be instant (less than 1/10th second) for almost all of it's use. It was when it grew sooo popular that it slowed down... or maybe it is the size of our accounts? or both? You would think Google would not have the same problem that Outlook/Thunderbird has (big account = unusable)

Travis, that was about 30 mins ago.

Do people who have the invite now have access to the google spreadsheets group?

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

Oh. Good question...

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

Answer: No.

OREO [PersonRank 10]

I got invited! I'm in...

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

What is your email? You can join the big test.

dpneal [PersonRank 10]

It's not out on Google labs yet. I bet the are still sending out emails. Hopefully I'll get mine soon.

Sunil Nair [PersonRank 9]

dpneal, nope, do not see any invites as yet.

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

Anyone who is in... email me with your address and you can be invited into the test sheet that me, Maximo, and Philipp have been playing with.

Richard Shin [PersonRank 0]

http://www.tomkidding.com/uize/uize-js-api/examples/slideshow-with-dissolve.html

Google could use something like this if they come out with a power point replacement

Maximo [PersonRank 0]

I say again (as Philipp said) there is no 'invite' capability. Sharing a document with a non-invitee does *NOT* get them a Google Spreadsheets account. Sorry.

OREO [PersonRank 10]

What's your email Sam? I'll send you my email there.

Mrrix32 [PersonRank 10]

Maximo : No wonder I havn't got an Invite! you took them all! :-)

Do you think Google will release more invites today, or will they make us wait?

toml [PersonRank 6]

what do you think how many people from the beginig until first invites have been sent could sing up ?

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

There is a bug with the chat:

http://static.flickr.com/65/161698356_06daee5311_o.png

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

myname[put at-character here]gmail.com

Maximo [PersonRank 0]

I meant for the benefit of the entire forum. Maybe that was a mishap. Lets wait and see how many people get invites. I'm sure Philipp wouldn't appreciate this thread turning into a request forum. So I suspend my offer temporarily – it was done in the heat of "I'm-so-cool-I-got-a-beta-invite" insanity. Sorry.

Regardless, (as Philipp said) there is no 'invite' capability. Sharing a document with a non-invitee does *NOT* get them a Google Spreadsheets account. Sorry.

dpneal [PersonRank 10]

Sorry Sam i can't see it, what is the bug with the chat?

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

When you click on the file menu (or various other places) the place where you enter text flies off the screen.

Mrrix32 [PersonRank 10]

They have two people loged on to the same account, the third person can't tell who is who but the other two can

dpneal [PersonRank 10]

Ahh ok. Any amazing new features? or is it pretty much what is in Excel?

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

Check Philipp's review...

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

Maximo, you can post your email here if you want, then people can directly email you with requests for invited accounts, or you can open up a new thread dedicated to handing out invites.

Maximo [PersonRank 0]

Invites don't work though...maybe I'll be a huge capitalist and sell my other Google accounts that have a spreadsheet invite on eBay.

/pd [PersonRank 10]

yeah.. I just caught up with Philipp's review. I think that the chat within SS is a brillant move.. ..

btw, I am still awaiting an invite ..maybe I am not an early bird ::(-

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

The chat is buggy as mentioned above. Me and Maximo keep finding showing/hiding it causes rendering issues.

they are both working for me.... Did you use camtasia? that is what I use.... I really like it. If not, you should give it a test with the trial. if you like it, it is probably worth the investment for someone like you.

Philipp: video's are working for me!

"Thanks for signing up to use Google Spreadsheets! Your Google account associated with this email address (...) has been activated, so you can begin sharing spreadsheets on the web!"

YEAH!!!

simon Roe [PersonRank 1]

Art-One, when did you ask for it? How long was it from asking to getting?

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

I used Windows Media Encoder. Hi quality, but unfortunately no direct MPG support. Will check Camtasia.

You now can't invite people who don't have a Google Account:

Ouch.

Art-One [PersonRank 10]

iZeitgeist [PersonRank 10]

Anyone else able to do this?

iZ: You should be invited to the group one.

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

Got my invite now!

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

> Anyone else able to do this?

Nope. I guess iZeitgeist has got an invitation coming his way and he's just tried logging in before he received it. I can't login yet though and I requested an invite around 9:00 AM (UK time)...

Jon M [PersonRank 1]

i also was able to log in without an invite... just went to spreadsheet.google.com and there was a spread sheet on my screen

maybe they'll be sending me an invite soon, i'm not really sure how google operates all this stuff behind the scenes. seems a little haphazard.

Corsin Camichel [PersonRank 10]

They must have secured it very well.
You can not look at the JavaScript sources without an invitation...

/pd [PersonRank 10]

yeah I think thats it ..Because Corsin shared the .js and I could not see the basecode

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

BTW – what's going on with the random subdomains? I noticed this earlier after reading Philipp's original post when he mentioned this new subdomain...

http://a.svc-1.google.com

It looks like some *.svc-1.google.com domains were used for testing the concept behind the http://spreadsheets.google.com domains. Some of them now redirect to http://spreadsheets.google.com whereas others redirect to the Google home page:

e.g. http://you.can.type.whatever.you.like.here.followed.by.svc-1.google.com

This now also works for the spreadsheets.google.com subdomain (as you can see in the screenshots and videos posted to this site):

i.e. http://this.should.redirect.to.spreadsheets.google.com

More "fun" with this here: http://ruscoe.net/blog/2006/06/another-google-exclusive.asp ;-)

/pd [PersonRank 10]

yeah your svc-1 link points to my hompy :)-

"SV"C normally stands for "static virtual channel" -does it still represent the same in googlesphere ??

David Hetfield [PersonRank 10]

it works!!
thanks Tony!! :)
i used this link:
a.svc-1.google.com

and it worked!

thank ou thank you thank..
now ill need to find something to do with it.. :/

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

Nice find Tony (might also come in handy for April Fool's) – and they don't seem to exclude the domains from search engines, so they'll get indexed now right?

sign on == < goto >>

click on http://spreadsheets.google.com/

and this will get you in without an invite :)_

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

Ok. It is in labs now too.

J.P. Tuttle [PersonRank 1]

Mrrix32--
I think it works like Writely – you can't invite someone to get an account, but you can invite them to collaboratively edit, which gives them an account.

Not sure, though. Can someone try it anyway?

Mrrix32 [PersonRank 10]

Slight bug. My browser refreshed (I don't know why) and It said I was viewing the file twice and I could chat with my self, Any one else had that? Good thing is I've now seen the chat working.

J.P. Tuttle [PersonRank 1]

Oh. It doesn't matter anymore. I think it's *really* live or something.

I haven't been invited yet, and I haven't recieved anything from Google. I *did* sign up both this morning and a few times during the day.

I'm using it right now. All I did was go to labs.google.com and click on the Google Spreadsheets link.

Not sure if it'll work for you guys...
