Can't understand Hebrew, what does the blog say exactly ?

Don't you think it's only Paint-ed ? (wouldn't go further to say Photoshoped).

Hermon – why is the url being grayed out

David Hetfield [PersonRank 10]

yeah..why? :/

This is strange, Hermon you said you can't read hebrew still you can provide screenshots of the presumed service on a hebrew machine (notice everything right to left, even the green start button on the buttom).

My theory:

Since I know that Google just opened an office in Isreal. This might be an over excited -and no used yet to the Google secrecy- Google employee. Then might be a legit unlaunched yet Google service.

iZeitgeist [PersonRank 10]

My best guess at the grayed out URL:

...google.com/metatags/xxx/xxxxxx.do

Can anyone sharpen the image or anything to get a better ideas on what it might be. (I am at work, I can't)

PS: Hermon, when I said Google employe I was referring to someone you know, not you!

David Hetfield [PersonRank 10]

Hermon says the following:
the same person who gave him this info is "playing games" with him.
at first he told him that this service has launched. afterwards he gave him a screenshot, and now Hermon is hoping that he'll give him a link..
lets hope he will!

IZ: I can't reproduce with sharpening..

Secondly, my sources in IL tell me a totally different story wrt to this meta tag thingy.. I would dismiss the chatter as being "speculation" and if I had to cross over the line, I would have to blatently say Photshopped(?) --which we all know-- what that means

...nuff said from my corner.. :)-

my guess is:
www.google.com/metatags/inteXpeople.de
or
www.google.com/metatags/inteXgoogle.de

You can try to guess the URL here:
http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/8241/sc4h5xd.png

It's http ://google.com/metatags/intl/~i don't understand~.do

Haochi [PersonRank 10]

It's possible that Google is testing the Meta Tags...Google use .do extensions. Time to figure out the URL.

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

I've been trying to guess for a while now with no luck so far! It's quite possible that this is simply something that already exists in Google Search Appliance that's now being rolled out as a Labs product just because they can...

BTW, my best guess was:

http://www.google.com/metatags/intl/regdo.do

Garett Rogers [PersonRank 10]

This is an example of a URL found on Google with a .do extension

https://www.google.com/adsense/login.do

although, this is pretty much the only url I could find like this – did a search on Google:

site:www.google.com inurl:do -Top -blogsearch

David Hetfield [PersonRank 10]

somehow this page redirects itself to Google Israel. (google.co.il)
https://www.google.com/metatags/intl/login.do

anyone get a different page?

(found by me :) after 15 minutes of playing with the domain name..)

Garett Rogers [PersonRank 10]

https will always redirect to the googlehomepage... the screenshot is only http which doesn't have the same behaviour

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

Yeah looks like you can append a lot to https...

I would just like to point out that generally speaking when google uses /intl/ in part of their urls it is followed by the language abbr that you are reading. Which I don't seem to be able to make out in the blurred part. I don't think I've ever seen /intl/ followed by a page such as /intl/regde.do or whatever that link is supposed to be. It doesn't seem to make sense.

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

>> somehow this page redirects itself to Google Israel...

I made that mistake too and it took me ages to figure out why I couldn't reproduce it when I tried again!

>> ... generally speaking when google uses /intl/ in part of their urls it is followed by the language abbr ...

Yep – I tried adding "en" too. I also tried URLs like:

www.google.com/metatags/intl/about.html
www.google.com/metatags/intl/en/about.html
www.google.com/support/metatags/

etc...

Maybe it's not "intl" – I thought it could be "init" (i.e. for "initialize").

i still think it's likely we're all wasting our time b/c this looks photoshopped. It's not that hard to dl a copy of google.com and edit it. There's never been a labs release before with all the other links on top of the search bar that I can think of, as well as the "make google my default search" box for IE7 *and* the three links on the right hand side of the search box. It doesn't make any sense.

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

Caleb: How about Google Suggest?

http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1

That looks exactly the same as that screenshot for "Meta Tags" to me. It's got the three links on the right hand side of the search box and also the "Feedback – Discuss – Terms of Use – FAQ" links in the footer.

Also, I thought that "Make Google my default search" was standard in IE7? (Although it's bad localization for Google, because on that system, it's pointing to the wrong corner!)

Hermon, are you here ?

Caleb E [PersonRank 10]

but suggest is specifically designed to clone the google homepage. and the IE7 search thing only appeared for me on the homepage. I imagine it would also appear for Google Suggest b/c that's essentially just google.com with ?complete=1

Does anyone here have IE7 installed? If so, I'd like to know:

1) Whether the favicon gets displayed in the address bar as well as the tab when you visit a site that has one.

ii) What happens to the icon in the address bar when you start typing?

c) Bearing that in mind, does the screenshot still seem to be real?

(And don't forget that the screenshot is rendering RTL and not LTR...)

For example, with IE6, the favicon *sometimes* gets displayed in the address bar. When you start typing there, whatever icon was there disappears. I was just wondering whether in IE7 the icon changes to the standard IE icon when you type a new URL in the address bar. (If so, that probably means they typed the URL after loading the doctored HTML page and then did a bad job photoshopping that screenshot!)

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

I made a screenshot of Google in IE7:
http://blogoscoped.com/files/google-israel-ie7-sample.png

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

Interesting. In that case, you would surely expect that other screenshot to have the Google favicon in the address bar then.

What happens if you start to type another address in the address bar? Does the icon change to the IE one?

Tony,

At this page http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2006-05-10-n76.html , quote:

"The internal name of this product seems to have been iZeitgeist, as Tony Ruscoe found out." referring to Google Trends.

Could you please confirm this ? Where did it appear ?

I should probably sue Google for using my name ,-)

This was in the HTTP header for Google Trends when it launched:

Server: iZeitgeist Frontend

It's since been changed to "Google Trends" though...

Let's consider Google Meta Tags is legit. Anyone has an idea on what it might be ?

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

A revamped HTML tags initiative? But that would be Google Co-op no?

Tony, both Favicons stay the same here. In IE6 favicon support was flaky often, tho, so the icon would sometimes appear, sometimes not, and sometimes be deleted when the cache is deleted. It's another point that makes the screenshot look doctored though.
