This is nice success on Wikipedia:
The English Wikipedia reached a milestone on Thursday this week when the 1,000th featured article was promoted. The featured articles are what Wikipedia believe to be the best articles in Wikipedia. At present, there are 1004 featured articles, out of a total of 1,187,960 articles on Wikipedia.

Wikipedia to me is great because it serves the "long tail" of interests. E.g. I just entered "three gorges dam" in Google before and I kind of suspected a Wikipedia article would be on top, which it was. The list of featured articles is more of a "traditional" encyclopedic approach I think...
