OK, so John's friend argues that Google doesn't want to get into the content/ publishing game, and also that this would conflict with AdSense. But isn't MySpace just like Orkut, Blogger, Google Page Creator and so on? And doesn't Blogspot already offer lots of AdSense?

Philipp, you are right, it's all content/publishing. You forgot to mention Base and even some other services can be considdered as content/publishing services at least partly.
