I've tried to login to Orkut, but it gave me a "bad, bad server" error.

The only ad that I can see is for Joga.
But no adwords there, for the moment, for me

Ads in Orkut (particularly image ads) would be kind of intrusive, but Joga.com is some soccer-related Google site. If it's just this one cross-promotion ad during the World Cup, I'm not going to raise a fuss.

Besides, I already killfiled it.

I didn't see it at first and had to search long time. Not so disturbing imo. And they have to pay the service in one way or an other, I think...

I don't mind the ad, although some users were complaining about it. Sigh.

Since many of them could not figure out how to remove it, I pasted instructions on my weblog.

I don't mind the Ad (although I'm not into the Joga forum that much), but like Art-One said, they have to pay for the service one way or another.
