Google plans to build an office and research center in Ann Arbor, Michigan that will have up to 1,000 employees, the New York Times reported..
Most of the center's space would be used for a technology and call center, the Times said. About 40,000 square feet will be used to house a library digitization project, which has been hindered by court challenges over copyrights.

The local paper had this to say about it <quote> At an 11 a.m. news conference in Lansing Tuesday, Google will unveil plans to create a headquarters facility for its Google AdWords unit. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060710/NEWS99/307100004/1122 </quote>
I just checked and the only jobs listed right now are for the digital scanning http://www.google.com/support/jobs/bin/topic.py?dep_id=1060&loc_id=8371
It seems that the new center will have a deul roll, adwords and digital scanning. |
Hardly unexpected.
The post also includes a link to a 2001 interview with Larry Page, a University of Mich grad (located in Ann Arbor) about his work there and his fondest memory. It does not involve engineering, databases, search, or anything close.

This post points to Google scouting AA as a possible location since pre-June 2005. In this post we link to a 2005 SEW Blog post where we learned that Google was "scouting" locations in AA. http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050609-150713
They have been hiring in AA since 2005 http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/051009-173354 |
