It appears that Google licensed ALL of DigitalGlobe's imagery on an _exclusive_ basis for online presentation. So if i wanted to do something on a website, with DigitalGlobe's hi-res imagery, for example if the Google Maps framework isn't flexible enough, i cannot legally go around Google to license the image myself! I can imagine why Google did this – to prevent Microsoft,Mapquest etc. from licensing the same imagery in their webmapping frameworks – but the net effect is that ordinary people, NGOs and small companies are also cut off.
This seems to skirt the edge of 'do no evil'.
|
So why not use another service.
For example: GlobeXPlorer licenses data to users. (GlobeXplorer also provides data to Ask Maps. http://www.globexplorer.com/
In fact, where Ask Maps offers aerial imagery (U.S. and Parts of Western Europe, find the image you want, click "buy poster" and purchase the image this way. Example: http://maps.ask.com/maps?l=lt%3D42.3749983061%7Clg%3D-71.1061093211%7Cal%3D0%7Ccx%3D-26510279%7Ccy%3D-17473647%7Czm%3D0%7Cvt%3D1~lt%3D42.375%7Clg%3D-71.10611%7Cad%3DCambridge%2C%20MA%7Csd%3D0%7Cdm%3D0~#1
Also, the USGS offers tons of free imagery at various resolutions. Dowload for free here: http://seamless.usgs.gov/
or check the imagery in "action" via the awesome World Wind product (free). http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/ http://www.worldwindcentral.com
Finally, Carterra from OrbiImage offers numerous vendors of aerial and satellite imagery. Massive! http://carterraonline.spaceimaging.com/cgi-bin/Carterra/phtml/login.phtml
