Google released a new homepage design for Google Base. This is currently available on the US version and will be available soon in the UK and Germany.

Yeah, light blue boxes are more "in fashion" than yellow boxes.

But does the new design work better without a search box? Or even a "Search" link?

The best part of the new design is the slogan – "Post it on Base. Find it on Google" – because that sums the service up really well (something i've found hard to understand for a while).

Right. The search box must be put back. This is weird, especially for Google.

Wow, you're right. That is ... odd.

Why? Who would use Google Base for searching? That not the purpose of the service. Google Base is not an interface for users and now it´s clearly sure for visitors. Do you have something to add? Come on and take a look which kind of content here already is. You are just browsing? Go away a try Google.com.

So there's a real tension between the idea of "Post it on Base. Find it on Google" (which explains why the search box is gone from the front page), and the idea that we might find it useful to search structured data.

For example, I can search Base for compiler jobs sorted by most recent post date and within a chosen distance of my location.
http://base.google.com/base/search?a_n558=jobs&a_y558=9&a_o558=&gl=US&hl=en&nd=&showrefine=1&q=compiler&a_n215=job+function&a_y215=1&a_o215=0&a_v215=&a_v215=&a_n194=job+type&a_y194=1&a_o194=0&a_v194=&a_v194=&sl=true&a_n152=location&a_y152=6&a_o152=0&a_t152=30&a_v152=US+city+or+zip&scoring=ld&us=1

I can't find an easy way to do that with Google Search.

Never liked that yellow box. Looks more "Googly" now. Bring back the search!
All the rest of Base is the same still isn't it?

you can still search GBase by clicking *[put at-character here]Gmail.com's items the using the search box there. It would be a lot easier if they'd left it on the homepage.

This site was just added to the robots.txt recently: http://google.com/base/search

It's still weird that there's no search box on the main page though.

I want the Search Box back. Without this Box its not a Google-Page, searching is Googles Business...

Elsewhere I like the new design, hope that the design from the articles will change soon too.

The Google Base main page has been redesigned. Check it out: base.google.com/

Also, I think it's about time to ask: Is anyone using this thing? What do you use it for?

David Hetfield:

Mrrix32:

David Hetfield:
