a custom search with the ability to earn money off the adsense ads would be nice. We would then see an explosion of vertical search engines, all powered by Google.

Win/win for everyone involved, I think.

Index bench could be a way to measure index sizes by doing random queries...

Random Sampling from a search engine's index – enables one to make good estimates of the index size.

IndexBench could be tools that measure the quality of an index....

Alexa more sounds like Google Trends but I doubt Google IndexBench is something real interesting. But what would that be?

hmm this doesn't google co-op already do something kind of similar to "rolling your own search results"

... you can subscribe to sources you trust for good info, news, etc.

The Alexa Web Search Platform is actually a way for third-parties to access Alexa's crawl data. You get access to the documents they used to generate their index.
