Help! We need Starship Troopers! It's a bug invasion, they want to conquer Germany. Oh no! There is one, it's huge, oh no, ... run! ... aaargh! (...)

Nice.

I wonder if there was a bug on the lens, or if the originals aren't digital so someone's scanned slides / pictures and the bug was on the scanner...

Seems too 'small' to be on the lens, seems more likely to be from a scanner.

Yes, it is on the lens. More info at this recent Google Sightseeing post from a couple of days ago:

If it were on the camera lens it would have appeared in more than just one photo. I think this explanation from the Keyhole BBS sounds reasonable:

"It looks like a thrip, a very small (1mm or so) insect. The size might explain how it got involved in the printing process. The brown glob at the posterior end is bug poop, forced out of the poor critter as it got squished between a glass plate and the film during the scanning process."

Come on guys, bugs that are squashed by glass don't ooze that way. Try it!

My guess is that the bug was moving in the same direction as the scanning process as the scanner imaged its posterior. Then the bug stopped moving, and the scanner imaged the rest of it.

"It's not a bug, it's a feature."

And here's what I consider the funniest image relating to it:
