I think that if any of your site visitors use Google Desktop, this can inflate your stats in a misleading way.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I don't use Google Desktop, so can't be sure) but I think Google Desktop will automatically subscribe to the feeds of every site you visit (where a feed is available) so that it can show the feed items in its web clips or something... Can anyone confirm this?

(And I'm not saying that's what's happened her, just that it *can* happen.)

GDS subscribes you to the most visited sites.

Alex, I think GDS subsribes to any page that has an RSS feed.

On my GDS, I sometimes click on a webpage and the next thing it appears webclips as a conistent update!!

Nope. The setting says: "Automatically add clips from frequently visited sites." It makes sense.

You can add manually other feeds, though.

"from frequently visited sites" ??

Will this mean

a) a site that I freqently visit ? or
b) a site that freqent visitors ??

In the former case, I have visted the site only once. and then it pops up into webclips

Maybe I need to check this out more carefully

I'm not sure about GDS but just *how* do you meaningful count RSS subscribers?

- someone might subscribe but then switch RSS readers, or never read items
- someone might subscribe but the subcscription is hidden behind a proxy (1 subscription pulled hourly for 10,000s of readers)
- a tool might automatically subscribe

Of course, these numbers have some merit as relative values (e.g. blog A shows 2 Bloglines subscribers and blog B shows 200, maybe there is a meaningful difference). As absolute numbers – especially if you think of subscribers as people – it seems to be skewed.

Obviously, a).
