Don't you wish Google Web Search had a version allowing this precision?

CODE: create or destroy events
that could be part of the right definition if u're using Visual Basic, i guess..

[put at-character here]David : why don't u think that MS could mean success?
I never saw a more successful company..
I mean, u could hate some aspects about the company, or even hate the whole coorperation but does that mean that NOTHING about it can be good for you?
Hmm, would u admit MS is "rich" at least?

What did you enter and what did you get?

It was also broken for me a few minutes ago (nothing happened when I clicked the button, no matter what I entered), but it's working again for me now.

Your search – s+Rw+s+Aw+s+Nw+s+Dw+s+Ow+s+Mw+
s+Sw+s+Tw+s+Rw+s+Iw+s+Nw+s+Gw+
s+Sw+s+Ew+s+Nw+s+Tw+ – did not match any documents.

I entered Random String Sent

You need to instead enter an acronym e.g. "RSS", it's not really an 'acronym generator', but I can't think of a better description.

Doesn't work any more... :-(I'm sure that it's not to had to use a little PHP to make an Acronym generator.

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

It still works for me at the moment.

Note that when you get "did not match any documents" then there were simply no matches on Google's end... admittedly that happens for many words. Usually very short strings work best (something with 3 or 4 letters).

I still say my Acronym Creator is better. Way to almost steal the name. Use a thesaurus for that?

In other news, I had a dream that I was in a room full of Googlers and I asked them why can't they get regular expression searching on the main search site. In my dream they said it was a resource issue. Not sure if it still is in real life.

I don't know what you mean.

PHP is accronym for Pot head Pixie since 1972

He's saying that you 'stole is name by calling this the "Google Acronym Generator" when he has the "Acronym Creator" http://www.jasonblogs.com/acreator/index.php

Personally I think that's a bizarre accusation as what else are you going to call something that makes acronyms other than an acronym creator/generator/maker?

Gustavo [PersonRank 0]

I suggest a new game...
"What's the bigger acronym (more characters) you can find a meaning using this tool?"
I start it with: TQBFJOTLD
;)

Ok, I beat myself with: JFMAMJJASOND (12 characters).

Indeed, there are dozens of apps named "acronym generator" as it's simply a fairly obvious description of what's happening.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=acronym+generator&btnG=Google+Search

Luke Metcalfe too called it the most obvious way in the post I linked to from the credits ("Google inadvertently invents an acronym generator").

Iman: Ouch, that sucks. Does Iran have special laws against open source projects, or is this a US law preventing "export" of source code to Iran?

AFAIK, there is no such law, however Iran censors porn and some political sites.
US has embargoed Iran, but I'm not aware of a US law preventing export of "source code".

I typed in "SAFE" and got a whole lot of mozilla code links. I'm not at all into programming, so I'm not entirely clear what all these links are, but one of them was for a Mozilla browser extension (perhaps Firefox, perhaps not) called "Download Manager." It was a 'tar' file, which I assume is the filetype underlying the user's "Install Now" interface. Does anyone know why I got all these links after typing in "SAFE"? Can anyone explain (simply) what all these links represent?

Aviva Gabriel [PersonRank 1]

I'm also getting links to open source software (Amaya) from the University of Bristol (UK), and now this (note the smarmy comments in the text after the "64"):

mozilla/widget/src/gtk2/nsFilePicker.cpp

64: // XXX total ass. We should really impose a build-time requirement on gtk2.4
// and then check at run-time whether the user is actually running gtk2.4.
// We should then decide to load the component (or not) from the component mgr.

Okay, figured it out. For some reason, using this acronym generator has gotten me into 'codesearch.' Anyone know what's going on?

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

Aviva, yes, the Google Acronym Generator is hooked up to Google Code at http://www.google.com/code . It's basically a proof of concept but it does work :)
