Nope, that feature has been there since chat in Gmail was introduced.

I've recently being trying to work out how much quicker (if at all) gmail is without chat enabled.

yes its there since Gmail launched chat.. and i therefore dont use this because my gtalk and gmail chat interferes....

Oh, interesting. I just noticed it today and set it to not use chat. Oh well :)

I can't access to mail.google.com here, in France. Have you the same problem?
