Looking at the source of the page at leipziger-messe.de now, I must say that I have never seen a page with more META tags, and never seen a page that isn't spam or porn with more keywords.

I am not only appalled again by the lack of basic SEO knowledge in Germany on the part of the very well known offenders like BMW, I feel also personally defamed by the German press and blogosphere.

For instance the Golem article says that Matt Cutts has annouced a "fight against German search engines optimizers earlier this year", whereas in reality Matt said something like "we will fight also non english spam". Maybe I can locate the statement later on.

This is exactly why even big sites in Germany get banned. Even internet savvy journalists mix up SEO and spam. It is often hard work to optimize websites for Google and other search engines so that it should be referred to with due respect. Indeed Google itself does, outlining best practices for SEOs:

"SEO is an abbreviation for "search engine optimizer." Many SEOs provide useful services for website owners, from writing copy to giving advice on site architecture and helping to find relevant directories to which a site can be submitted."

Exactly.

"However, a few unethical SEOs have given the industry a black eye through their overly aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to unfairly manipulate search engine results."

That's "many" vs "a few".

In German:
http://www.google.com/intl/de/webmasters/seo.html

In Polish:
http://www.google.com/intl/pl/webmasters/seo.html

Outdated spam techniques like doorwaypages are rarely used by reknown SEOs. Those experts know that sooner or later they will face penalties for spam methods.

Real spammers use totally different tactics, like parasitical search engines on numerous "throw away domains" that get replaced immediately by new ones upon a ban.

Btw. there is a funny false friend in the German translation, the English word "copy" is translated as copyright notice – "Urheberrechtsbestimmungen". It should be "Texte".

I don't know what the site did SEO-wise, but boy are they in need of someone who knows HTML. They'd do well to replace both their server-side and client-side systems at this time.

And I agree, Golem should know better than to misquote Matt Cutts like this...
