Look at the notice in the bottom to update the page to reflect the new message I received. I think it is new, but why don't they just auto-update?

Kevin you are right, this is new
When you read a mail and the person send you an other mail, a message (at the bottom of the screen) appears.

i'm seeing an updated gmail with more options as a dropdown list instead of the links in a horizontal line..

I have those too. Also, there are options on the bottom of a conversation as well.

Looks great and clean, I really liked that update.

I wish Google will add the option to upload photos that you get from mail senders, right into your picasawebalbum. Don't you think that would be useful?

And the green/red/orange google talk status bolletjes :P

Looks good!

There's new a 'Five new Features!' link up the top:

Instead of 'more options' there is now 'show details'

Caleb E [PersonRank 10]

17 years ago #

What are the 5 features?
* Live conversation updates
* New reply menu
* new Gmail for Mobile

.
.
.

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

17 years ago #

New forward all and offline chat.

Pau Tomàs [PersonRank 10]

17 years ago #

[put at-character here]Caleb:

* Embarassment-reducing new message notifications
* Reply on top
* Get Gmail on your mobile phone
* Forward all
* Chat even when your friends are offline

However the latest two are not really new features they were released last week.

Inferno [PersonRank 10]

17 years ago #

1) Chat even when friends are offline.... offline message to friends from Gmail Chat Window

2) Forward All....

What bothers me know is that there are two menu bars at once – the mail action one on top and the drop down one. I think they should consolidate the two. To determine which conversation is selected when using those options, they can give the current conversation a blue box (like the blue box in Google Reader).

Well, I don't like it.

Have you seen any changes in Gmail.
I don't know how to submit the screenshot, otherwise I would have posted that. In Gmail, the more options is now sort of a dropdown

The 'More options' are being displayed as a dropdown for now. I am unable to post the screenshot, otherwise that would have explained it better

I think after the yahoo release of mixing by ajax Yahoo IM and Yahoo mail platforms, Google went fast and mature on functionality level:

1-Reply on top
2-Embarassment-reducing new message notifications
3-Forward all (that Elias Kai like the most)
4-Google Chat when your friends are offline.

But the Google Gmail on Mobile is cool when you get used on all shortcuts, like pressing 9 on your phone and you got an email starred :)

I actually like it quite a bit! I think the forward all should be in the reply drop down box, so you can forward all from any point in the conversation.

Keep up the good work google!

Re: http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2006-11-10-n78.html

<< A “forward all” feature to keep others up-to-date if they missed a conversation. I didn’t get this one in my Gmail yet, it seems. >>

It's worth noting that this obviously only appears when there's more than one message in the conversation – I assume you looked for it when viewing a conversation rather than just a single message? I thought it had disappeared too after I spotted it the other day: http://blogoscoped.com/forum/74480.html

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

17 years ago #

Yes, I did try with more than a single message for this reason, and couldn't find this feature.

On a side-note, I think this is another "lost art" of usability which OS's did right once: "ghosting" menu entries. The "forward all" should *always* show, even on single messages when you open the context menu, but it should be slightly grayed and inactive. This way, you'd understand the feature is potentially available (an important hint), and the item order would also stay consistent.

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

17 years ago #

Agreed! (BTW, it usually appears in the right hand side links beneath "Expand all" rather than in the drop down menu.)

joe [PersonRank 0]

17 years ago #

from Philip's post:
"ust by looking at them it’s unclear what they’re there for (like the small “x” next to a name, which I think is supposed to indicate that you wrote the mail)."
-> That's a chat indicator, showing that the person who wrote that message is on your chat list, but is offline right now. It is replaced by colored dots if the person is online.

"Gmail seems to need a design consolidation by now"
-> Agreed. Gmail came out right at the beginning of 'web 2.0', and was the first big user to push a lot of the new interactive features, but since it's kind of old by now (2.5 years) they still included several "web 1.0" design aspects. Since then, they've tried to incrementally add 2.0 features, and they're not mixing well with some of the original features

joe [PersonRank 0]

17 years ago #

not to mention, the abomination that is the "quick access bar" or whatever the hell that fake toolbar is in the upper left with links to other services.

bradsucks [PersonRank 1]

17 years ago #

I like the pulldown reply menu. I never liked having to "show details" and then find the option I wanted. It's quicker to add contacts now though I really wish they would allow you to quickly categorize your new contacts as you add them.

Can someone amplify the meaning of "Embarassment-reduction" ? –

This is a new term for me and Gmail has this while functionality built into gmail – So how does one qualify and quantify "Embarassment-reduction" ??

ukio [PersonRank 0]

17 years ago #

you forgot to mention the offline chat functionality in your post:

this is weird.. i logged into gmail and Windows Live Onecare Alerted me to a potential virus, so i said remove and now i lost these new features in Gmail. In fact I dont' have any reply, forward, or etc buttons on my mail. ..

Live Onecare's Virus Log says this..

11/10/2006 8:43 AM Windows Live OneCare found potentially harmful or unwanted software on your computer
Threat Name: BAT/BWG.A
Detection Date and Time: 11/10/2006 8:43 AM
File Name: C:Documents and SettingsKirbyLocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5WVPH0OO5mail[5].htm->(SCRIPT0067)
Threat Severity: Severe
Threat Category: Virus
Contained Object: (SCRIPT0067)
Virus and spyware monitoring found potentially unwanted software: (ANTIVIRUS_ONACCESS_INFECTED)
Threat Status: Detected

and btw this has done it on three computers so far that all have windows live onecare. So for some reason, Microsoft thinks Gmail's script is a virus?? So how do I get my gmail functionality back now??

/pd: The "Embarrassment" they're reducing is the embarrassment you get when your reply to one email looks silly or foolish because you haven't yet read a newer email that arrived while you were writing your reply.

Often people clarify statements or questions in follow-up emails, this helps to make sure you've got all the latest emails in a conversation before you hit send – hence saving you from potential embarrassment from replying without all the relevant information.

Matt Cutts [PersonRank 10]

17 years ago #

Does the view change for anyone else when you click details and see who wrote the email and the recipients?

/pd [PersonRank 10]

17 years ago #

yeah Matt, it changes (showdetails) the readiblity is increased!!

/pd [PersonRank 10]

17 years ago #

Reto : yeah "embrassment" is strong verb of emotions.. I wonder how the developers actually coined the term and attribute the feature to "reduction"

===>>"hence saving you from potential embarrassment from replying without all the relevant information"

After all , whats embrassing for you, may not be embrassing for me..!! :)-

To those who use outlook will be this feature to the email notifiction popup.. thats all!!! Not an "embrassment reduction" – per sec!!

Reto Meier [PersonRank 10]

17 years ago #

/pd: Well, I think there's a rule at Google about describing something as 'fancy new piece of Ajax magic' – so they have to come up with real-world benefits :)

hear hear Reto!! :)-

The dropdown menu doesn't work in Safari... How can they push a major update without testing it in all their supported browsers?

How can I mute (ignore) a conversation?

jep, I believe it IS new on Gmail. I'm fairly certain, at least, that it wasn't there last week.

In fact, I was so excited to see this that I made a blog post just about that one feature! :D
