You will need a fast computer to do this if you are a serious Google Reader user. I used a 3.4Ghz P4 w/ 2GB of ram and experienced some lag.
1. Go to Google Reader (Firefox or IE will work). 2. Go to your starred items, expanded view. 3. Tape your Page Down key down. This took around 5 minutes to download my ~2500 starred items. 4. Watch Firefox bloat up to 390 megabytes. 5. File > Save Page As > Whatever.htm. This created a 9MB Google Reader.htm and a 56MB GoogleReader_files folder. Firefox bloats up further to 420MB. 6. Close that tab and notice that Firefox only releases about 10MB of memory. wtf, mate?
This is a suboptimal solution. It would be nice to download all of this into an xmlified archive with a simple button press, but since Google doesn't offer that, and I am planning on using this data, I will post my script here as soon as I get it working. In the meantime, at least it is possible to save this stuff.

Brain, you may want to go here and update this page

There is a lot of buzz these days of the JSON facilities on the API's. I didn't check it out, but there maybe such thing for Google Reader too...
|
Sure it does... I will come back in an hour or so with more info... |
You want an xml file of your starred items? Just go to http://google.com/reader/atom/user/-/state/com.google/starred
From: http://www.niallkennedy.com/blog/archives/2005/12/google_reader_a.html the first result for Google Reader API on Google :)
Also, my extension(GMarks) https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2888/ has an option to show your Google Reader starred items, thats another way to get them out. If you don't have many Google Bookmarks, you could probably try 'Export Bookmarks" from the GMarks option window...I think that will also export your starred Reader items if you have that option checked. Though I'm not entirely sure about that. It exports them in a normal bookmarks.htm file. Then uninstall it if you don't like it :( |
