Google's IE7Haochi | Sunday, December 10, 2006 17 years ago • 8,926 views |
Hmm, this might surprise you, take a deep breath first... # #
http://www.google.com/toolbar/ie7/getie7.gif Google has its OWN optimized version of IE7, that is Internet Explorer 7! OMG!

The link should be http://www.google.com/toolbar/ie7/ |
Mambo | 17 years ago # |
Oh maa god.
That page actually is quite shocking.
So much for Firefox dedication, then :-)
To be honest, I don't mind people using Internet Explorer 7. In reality, the general public aren't going to opt for Firefox by the masses. At least IE7 has generally better support for coding. |

Guess why they did that? Look at the ads (of course, Google is on top :) and admire the competition for installing IE7.

This is Microsoft's marketing machine. They probably pump out specialized versions for many more websites. Scary ánd strange. |

There is the same on Yahoo! http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=IE7&fr=yfp-t-501&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8

I just downloaded Explorer 7 and the new Google package. Can anyone tell me how to refresh a page now and send a page to someone as there are no buttons for these functions now....except the gmail option which when I try to sign up for, I get the msg that it's a trial program and by invitation only. When I go to help it refers me to a bunch of irrelevant problems. Pls someone help! |

I'll try it- my PC wouldn't run the Yahoo version of IE7 for some reason. Maybe this will work. |

What about downloading IE7 from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/ ? |
Kirby Witmer | 17 years ago # |
did you notice that google and yahoos pages are almost identical. I wonder it that is a page supplied by microsoft? |
Brinke Guthrie | 17 years ago # |
nope. didn't work. well, it WILL run. but when i start up PC everytime, i get a 'framework entrypoint not found!' or something. Pass until the new PC in early 07 with Vista. |

I don't understand why MS would go for this.
Yes i understand they want broswer share... but where's the profit in browser share?
That's right.. the profitability of browser share comes from the home page and the search defaults.
if they let others change them and offer installs, what's the point of offering a browser? Just to spread brand awareness? |

When I search for IE7, I get sponsored links from Google AND Yahoo. Oddly enough though, the pages are virtually IDENTICAL!

"Upgrade to IE7"? That would be a downgrade from the Mozilla browser I'm using now. |
Ryan | 17 years ago # |
I think the best is the 3rd result.... www.ie7.com
classic! Is it just showing up based upon it's domain name? Cuz it doesn't mention IE7 on it, and it's only got 6 incoming links total. |

Anne – To refresh the page, look for the button at the end of the address box with 2 green arrows. To send the page in an e-mail, go to File / Send / E-mail Page (or Link). If you can't see a 'File' (text only, no button) on your toolbar, right click on the toolbar & tick 'Menu'

Hi Philip,
I wrote about Yahoo doing something similar here: http://searchviews.com/archives/2006/12/yahoo_pushing_i.php
Now it appears that Microsoft is working with both engines to get their browser installed. My questions remain; who is getting paid for what and when? How much of this is part of the barter deals setup months ago?
I guess we will wait and see. |

Jeremy Zawodny has some interesting comments on this:

(Looks like Google copied Yahoo!) |
Philipp Lenssen | 17 years ago # |
Oh wow. That is pretty obvious. I'll ask Google for a statement... |
Mambo | 17 years ago # |
It's blatantly supplied by Microsoft... surely Google wouldn't just completely rip-off a layout like that... |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 17 years ago # |
It's funny that the code is completely different, so it can't be a template. |
Nathan Weinberg | 17 years ago # |
Funny thing: Both your post and this very comments page has ads for Google's download and Yahoo's. AdSense targeting at its finest! |
Vivek Jani | 17 years ago # |
So, Google has updated the page to make it look different than the yahoo page, now... http://www.google.com/toolbar/ie7/ |

And here's a response from Matt...

Heh. |

Arghh, sorry for posting in the wrong place! |
TOMHTML | 17 years ago # |
He he he, I was talking about that there : http://blogoscoped.com/forum/78916.html#id78988 ;-) Why Matt Cutts "feeled obliged" (is it English?) to prove that Yahoo copies Google too? Just "apoligies" weren't enough? |
Tony Ruscoe | 17 years ago # |
We have a saying in English:
"People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones."
Basically, you shouldn't criticize someone for doing something that you're guilty of yourself. I think that's the point Matt was making. (Sure, it looks like Google copied Microsoft in this instance, but just about everyone copies Google...)
BTW, it's "felt obliged" ... ;-) |

It is reported that Google copies Yahoo... http://jeremy.zawodny.com/blog/archives/008122.html
I think Yahoo copies Google....:) |
