Gmail toolbar icon question?

So I have the newest toolbar, and the Gmail button was on there. I fiddled with the buttons, unchecked the Gmail icon and then put it back; and I noticed that now, first time ever, sometimes the icon looks like this:

This of course signals there's a new email; yet when I click on it, there isn't. This is in IE6.

Maybe it's the other way around? Not sure if that makes sense.

Maybe you have messages that are old but are marked as unread?

when you put the cursor on it says 'you have new gmail.' but the inbox is empty and no msg is there. my inbox is always clean- i read em and delete or archive.

I've found that sometimes it caches the XML file that tells it there's new mail. Closing the browser and / or clicking the drop down arrow next to it usually refreshes it.
