Phillip, take a look at http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=5594, "Google.com does not rank #1 for Google" on our forums that look at various reasons behind this.

The reason that https://desktop.google.com/ redirects to http://www.google.com/ relates to how SSL works (or doesn't work). When an SSL request comes into a server at a particular IP, the server sends sends its SSL certificate back to the client. For these SSL requests the server does not first look at which 'Host:' (HTTP header) is being requested to determine which SSL certificate to send to the client. For SSL requests, a particular IP will always send the client the same SSL cert.

Because desktop.google.com, froogle.google.com, and www.google.com share the same IP, any https request to any of those returns the www.google.com SSL certificate. Google probably decided that since they are returning the SSL certificate for www.google.com for all those domains that they might as well forward those requests to www.google.com so that the SSL certificate's domain matches the domain that the visitor is visiting.
