http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ does that with a calorie counter since at least 18 month (http://inlogicalbearer.blogspot.com/2005/05/google-maps-timeline.html).

The calorie counter is a funny twist.

The calorie counter is not that serious but the usability of gmap-pedometer.com is just great.

The google maps seem to display their map through Mercator projection. As we know from the primary education, the straight lines on Meractor projection are never the shortest ones. That's why the flight above the Atlantic Ocean from Europe to USA is shorter through Greenland, not along thr circle of latitude. However, their calculator is just fine. Just the matter of visualisation.

There doesn't seem to be a way I can calculate the distance between India and USA across the Pacific ocean. I suppose there is a work around but it would be nice to have the capability.

um, what about the curvature of the earth?
