Good update Phillip. I know google people say they feed their AI program official texts and documents but recently while looking at a friend's website statistics, we found 17 referals from this addresss http://216.239.37.104/translate_c which belogs to google. It now resolves to a "bad request" page – but to me it seems that google have been to her website with their translation mechines. She is a blogger from UAE who blogs mainly in english, but some people make comments on her entries in arabic as well.

Have you got any thoughts on that? Is google new mechine is really a spider that goes through every webpage online where two languages appeared, not just official documents as it seems from the information now available.

Also, I don't think Google needs any extra-crawler except there current one – they already store translations of web pages. They can access this index with other internal tools, like a machine translation. What they could do though is to support content-negotiation – they currently don't, and they're missing out on translations.

as far as machine translation goes I have to agree with Systran. MT is a very difficult problem and no one however bright or well thought of has yet come up with an answer. All everybody is doing is trying to solve the small problems as they are within our grasp. Machine translation got shut down before the net appeared because nobody could see a use for it. Its therefore some research years behind as it is. My view is that because it relies so heavily on computational linguistics, sorry, it is computational linguistics, there has to be progress in monolingual tasks first. We need to gain a better understanding of language and computers.
