http://pierre.slamich.googlepages.com/Google-GDM-0.1.tar.gz That way, Ubuntu will look like GoogleOS at the logon screen. This is beta. Some parts look ugly. But it might please Haochi ;-) |
Do you have a screenshot? |
Cool idea, but thats just an other picture on the logon-screen, or? (do i works with kdm [kde] too?) |
just an other picture on the logon-screen >> Yup but it took me some time to do (had to tweak quite a lot the dispaly file to make it work) and a nice time with Gimp Does it work with Kubuntu ? Well I don't know but as you have the Xcf, it shouldn't be difficult. I just don't want to tweak the whole system, but basically, it wouldn't be very hard making a Google derivative of Ubuntu It would also be nice if Google made public the contributions they made internally to Ubuntu at the Ubucon (happening in Google's Offices btw) |
Ok, as soon as i install (k)ubuntu, i will try this!
Are you able to create a google-like bootscreen, or things like that, too? |
I've done a wallpaper But I can do other parts if there's a great demand (and if that can convince ppl to switch to Linux ;-) |
i just LOVE the name – "Goobuntu"
its kinda catchy. |
I think I will reinstall Ubuntu some time soon. Thanks! :) |
Ok now with a splashscreen, a wallpaper, a nice beryl theme, wobbly windows and a 3D cube. Note that this technology exists today, it's in Linux, and in 10 years time it will perhaps be available for Windows users.
GoogleOS is a matter of minutes to create thanks to Linux
Two new vids with the new features: Google OS 2D Google OS 3D
Next steps would be: -Bootscreen, -Installing Picasa, GoogleVideo Uploader, GoogleEarth, -Gmail as default mail client system-wide -More integration with PicasaWeb (F-Spot is already able to upload to PicasaWeb, but right-clicking on Images should do just the same) -settings stored on GoogleServers -syncing for Calendars (I know there's a Linux project aiming to do that) -you should log into your session using your Google account credentials and the .home should be automounted from there, or at least you should be logged from the beginning into your account (no need to log again) (much easier to do) -OpenOffice should offer an option to save directly to Google Docs ..
I'm not an expert, but I'm sure that if I get detailed descriptions, we can do something together (any coders around ??) or I can create specs for the next version of Ubuntu to be discussed with Google Engineers during the next Ubucon (they could do that on their 20% time)

yes, a coder here. but i am not very well i things like that.
yes, i also think an calendar (or c&s) offline client would be nice. |
Idea: Create a ubuntu distribition which uses GDrive (Gmail) to store your linux home directory (documents and settings). So you can login with your gmail account!
Briljant! (again) |
that would be huge, you you think that this is practicable? |
Yup. They must be already doing it internally. The only problem I see would be the load for the servers and the time it takes to retrieve. That would be more kind of syncing with the servers with diffs. You upload your home once, and then you diff. |
