It's also not the first time that a search engine has put related searches in that spot:

In my thinking, everything is selling. When at shop, too many selection will made no sell.
I think right-hand box just a patch for modify the mistakes. The right position is not good, should place at bottom. The customer just come in your store and make a selection, at least, you should let him see some products ,then give advice.
And, right position is the best advertise position.
For the selection, it should not be "narrow the search, expand search, related", just give some related suggest links below enough. Save a selection for your customers. |
How is Google able to draw real usage statistics from this when this is only shown once to every user. Everytime I saw this before reading Google Blogoscoped I though this was a bug and immediately reloaded. I guess other may react similarly or just click the links out of curiosity. Am I wrong or is it simply that by showing it so many people that on average it doesn't matter if "one or two" users are confused? |
Someone else has been seeing it too now, in Hungarian:

The right-hand box translates to "The following search: CIF ... Images... Groups"

Google tried another design on me: The strange thing is that it only works when I use firefox and in the address bar I type: google MySearchHere
Here's the print screens I did: http://img489.imageshack.us/img489/4188/google2dm1.jpg http://img489.imageshack.us/img489/5089/googledesignvy0.jpg |
Another one, this time with JS error:

See the image, I can reproduce this using any search terms. Got to say, I quite like it, although the Maps link seems a little out of place

A bit jaggec in my opinion |
Yes, it seems silly having all those links right on the other side of the page, and all the aligning seems very wonky. |
Looks broken this time, with the "new" bit... |
Looks like I need to learn to search this blog a little better
Just noticed, is that my own user icon next to my name? |
Yup Stephen... (and don't worry about finding older threads when it comes to things like layout prototypes, because in order to really search for them you have to know exactly which words have been previously used to describe them!) |
Thanks for the icon, just getting a little annoyed with myself in the previous post as I seem to keep posting old news
