The top 40 blogs for the day are just that – the 40 blogs with the most unique blogs citing them on the given day. The blogs du jour, if you will. This list will mostly contain the familiar A-list blogs, but pretty much every day will also include a few blogs enjoying their 15 minutes of fame, thanks to a highly linked post.
On the other hand, the profile rank is a determined from a moving average of the #citing weblogs over 30 days. This rank is more representative of a blog's staying power. However, since it's a moving average, the rank trend shows the gradual shift in popularity of the weblog.
