The lifehacker[1] tip to embed Google Calendar on an active desktop gave me another twist on that idea:
Google Gadgets on the desktop.
Start with generating the code to embed into a html page (which can live on your local computer)
this example uses the Google Babes Gadget:

Embedding the generated source code, yields a web page: http://r2unit.com/gmodule/desktop.html
Which you can then follow the same instructions to make that your Active Desktop. There you have it, a rotating picture of the moment from the GoogleDex! This one Jessica Alba!
