I have the weather plugin on my personalized Google homepage. Since my city (Bamberg, Bavaria) is not listed in the selection box for german cities I added it via entering "Bamberg, DE" in the search box for american cities (but it works with any country). I also added "Hamburg, DE" the same way.

However, since 2 days or so, these cities appear as "Bamberg, BY" and "Hamburg, HH" on my homepage, while clicking on them still leads to search results for "weather Bamberg, DE". It seems like Google has updated this plugin to support the german federal states.

Interestingly, this also works for Google Maps: Searching for "Neustadt, BY" lists only towns in Bavaria while "Neustadt, MV" listing those in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. So I wonder, if it's not the weather plugin, but the maps geolocator, which was updated.

Are german federal states usable in other Google services?
