I wonder if it was simply a matter of most people don't use it and aren't familiar with it?

I like GTalk, but most of the people I would want to chat with use MS Messenger.

<<Included in the study for the first time, Dogpile ranks highest among search engines, with top ratings from Internet service subscribers in all three factors that determine overall satisfaction within the segment: ease of use, functionality and results. Ask.com and Google, respectively, follow Dogpile in the segment rankings.>>

And there goes the credibility of that study ;)

Seriously, unless we can analyze exactly who participated in the survey and how the survey was set up I won't believe a thing. It may or may not be people are more happy with Yahoo Messenger, I don't know, I just wouldn't come to a conclusion on this based on above...

The problem with IM clients is that most people choose them based on the number of friends/contacts who use them. So if most of your friends use AIM, you'll use AIM (few choose all-in-one solutions).

Dogpile has a cool feature that shows queries (in real-time?):

It would be good if someone made an app that you could run and it would make you an account for AIM, Gtalk/Jabber, MSN/Live messenger, Y! Messenger etc and allowed you to see all your contacts with a single window. If anyones knows of something like this already please tell me.

Also for kids a similar thing for SNS's would be good with a single webpage to log onto like www.mysns.com (just made that up) to see all the comments made etc. Also you could log into myspace, bebo, Orkut etc. with the details it creates for you. Mabey this could be your next site, eh Philipp.

Gaim (now Pidgin) shows all your contacts in one window.

I use Gmail Chat exactly this way. It's a hub for all my contacts from all different IM networks.

Google Talk has no reliability?
excuse me, but compare all the times that Live Messenger wasn't available or when i got logged out for no reason. (and that happen A LOT!)

I think i can rely on Google Talk much more than on Live Messenger.

PS:
Some consider Windows Messenger as a spyware..!

Trillian also lets you view all your contacts, and color codes them by what network they're on:

google talk is way cleaner than anything else.... it's lacking some key features so far... but those will be added. On the other hand, I rather have it lacking 99% of msn/live messengers, cause they only clutter the whole thing.

that's why we love google, isn't it?

and yes, talk is way more reliable than anything else

Does gmail chat shows your friends online if they are on MSN or Yahoo?

Not by default, but yes if you know how to properly add them there and have yahoo/MSN account yourself.

James, just download the jabber plugin. Been around for years, I think.
