Well, here's an extension dedicated to that, but unfortunately, it only goes up to Firefox 1.5. You could always use Nightly Tester Tools to make all extensions valid, of course. I doubt this extension will malfunction with version 2.0.

Personally, I always just use the Google Toolbar for searches, and reserve the Firefox search box for Wikipedia searches instead.

Try the following (it worked for me):

me personally, i use the urlbar for search. by default it uses googles i am feeling lucky function. but you can easily change that.

type about:config in the urlfield
Double-click on keyword.URL – change the value to:
http://www.google.com/search?q=
(you can use any other default search eingine, eg http://www.searchmash.com/search/)

if you want to use multiple search engines, right click in any search window > add a keyword ... and then typea keyword in the keyword box, eg yahoo or y for yahoo search. then, whenever you want to search using another search engine, precede your search by the word "yahoo" or "y". and you can get rid of the entire search box from there on.

I'm also a fan of Searchbar Autosizer. I just thought of it, and I think it might work well for you, also. Try it, and tell me what you think of it.

Why would you want to do that? I use the addressbar as google toolbars search by name feature. Gmail takes you to gmail for instance.I use Google toolbar if i want to search.

[put at-character here]Brinke Guthrie: Did you try my last suggestion (right above your last comment)? I think it'd work really well for you. Not only would the seach box adjust it's size to whatever you type in, it'd also stay bite-sized (but not too small) when you're not using it, saving screen space.
