Budokan
Budokan [WMV] was a martial arts game for the Amiga 500. It had semi-realistic moves, nice graphics, sound and playability... and trying to master the skills of Bo, Nunchaku, Kendo and Karate and try them against a variety of enemies was very addictive. Finishing the game took me quite a while – it was one of the hardest game I’ve ever finished on my Amiga.
Here are some of the details that made the game so interesting:
- Your master would give comments after your training.
- All characters you fight in the tournament have their special history and fighting style. You needed to adapt your tactics to defeat each one of them.
- The last warrior would shadow your moves of all previous battles; he would play in just the style you did. If you had a trick (e.g., repeating an effective move over and over), this would now be turned against you and effectively destroy you. Winning against your clone meant playing less perfect or very balanced in previous fights.
- You couldn’t pick the same weapon over and over during the main tournament. You could only choose one style – like Nunchaku, or Bo sticks – a few times. If you would waste your good weapons, you’d be left with only Karate against the stronger enemies (Karate was not the most dangerous weapon in the game, as it didn’t have very wide reach).
- The pond in the main screen would hide an easter egg – a red dragon which would show his head once in a while.
- This was no quick beat ’em up in which pressing random joystick buttons fast would yield a win. Without strategy and training, you’d get nowhere.
- As you could only use a certain weapon for a limited amount of fights, mastering every of the four martial arts was crucial to success. Thus, you were forced to spent time training each on of them to perfection.
