NYT on Google Infrastructure

A New York Times articles discusses the Google infrastructure, including MapReduce, the Google File System, and the Google Work Queue. According to the article, Google switched from Intel to Opteron chips by Advanced Micro Devices ’cause they use less power. Also, Google’s Urs Hölzle adds that Google already considered creating custom semiconductor designs (Urs left it open if they already did that). Urs says:

Having lots of relatively unreliable machines and turning them into a reliable service is a hard problem ... That is what we have been doing for a while.
