Google Toolbar Defends Against Other Search Engines

Ionut Alex. Chitu investigated into a strange feature of Google’s latest toolbar for Internet Explorer: a program that, when enabled, “defends” against other programs trying to switch the default browser search engine to something other than Google. He writes:

Even if you disable ’Search with Google’ from the toolbar, and kill GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe, everytime you load IE, Google Toolbar launches GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe once again.

A “little evil,” as Ionut concludes?

Update: Ionut got a statement from Google – they say it’s a bug that the EXE remains after unchecking the option, and that they’re working on fixing it. [Thanks Ionut.]
