Google Joins DataPortability.org

Following an announcement today, Brad Fitzpatrick will represent Google on the DataPortability.org workgroup. Xoogler Benjamin Ling (who left Google three months ago for Facebook) will join Brad, along with Joseph Smarr from Plaxo. Amongst others, they’ll be joining Robert Scoble, who recently caused controversy when he tried to run a tool produced by Plaxo to collect data from his friends’ Facebook profiles and got banned in the process.

With social networks containing so much personal data, which is inevitably available to others, I have to wonder whether making all this data portable is necessarily a good thing...
