www.google.co.uk is showing the logo for me, but not www.google.com. |
I can see it on google.com. Weird... maybe one of those geo-location things? |
In addition to the oneboxes you listed, I'm also getting a "Blog posts about roald dahl" onebox just under "Searches related to: roald dahl". |
Now I get it too, this is interesting as it wasn't there before... it seems Google dynamically picked up on the blog chatter surrounding Roald Dahl's birthday/ the Google logo, and thus increased the relevance factor for that onebox! |
Sometimes it's really hard not to draw conclusions: Google doesn't post a special logo for the United States' Memorial Day nor for 9/11 but they do for Roald Dahl.
Besides being the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl was also a virulent Jew-hater. In 1983, he defended himself against accusations of antisemitism with this statement:
"There’s a trait in the Jewish character that does provoke animosity...I mean there is always a reason why anti-anything crops up anywhere; even a stinker like Hitler didn’t just pick on them for no reason."
Compare Google's actions and inactions with Dogpile on 9/11: http://www.danzfamily.com/archives/blogphotos/07/911-dogpile.jpg |
The Google Dahl image appeared on google.com for me this morning, but it's gone now. |
Still showing on google.co.uk, maybe they accidentally rolled this out globally? |
Showed up for me this morning in the USA......gone now. |
The logo was not up on google.com in the early morning, however by mid-morning it was up.
I also think that Google is trying to be apolitical when it comes to their logos. It seems that they have them for certain holidays and events, but not usually politically related ones. |
I emailed google asking if we could get a poster version of the Dahl logo. Received a blanket email back saying the logo had been pulled during the day due to responses from users and wondered why. Sounds like maybe the anti-Semitic comments were the reason. Didn't know about his politics/viewpoints; we just enjoyed his books. |
