This is not new on Gmail but new to me

abc[put at-character here]gmail.com = a.b.c[put at-character here]gmail.com = a.bc[put at-character here]gmail.com = ab.c[put at-character here]gmail.com

Sounds interesting, anyone seen this before?

Yeah,it's cool! But my favourite thing to do is when giving your email to a website put +and the site eg.xuanjames+ebay[put at-character here]gmail.com. Now set up a filter so all mail going to that address will go in a separate label. Now you can tell what sites are selling your email address! Cool, right?

Too bad many sites don't allow the plus signs. But in those cases the ability to add dots is useful, as you can still filter that.

The only trick with gmail is you must always login with the same name you signed up with, so you can't add or remove dots when logging in. But for receiving mail you can do as you described.

Some sites reject the "+" email addresses (dunno why) but then allow the "." separated addresses
