Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |

18.30 in Central Europe (GMT+2) 17.30 in United Kingdom / Portugal (GMT + 1 = BST)
|
/pd | 18 years ago # |
I'll be in chat room for this discussion |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
Is it really going to be 3.5 hours long? |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Last year's Google Factory Tour – did they just rename this to Press Day? – was also about the same length: http://www.google.com/press/factorytour.html |
dpneal | 18 years ago # |
Thanks Sam I guess it is going to be 3.5 hours long. Don't know what they will talk about for that long though! |
OREO | 18 years ago # |
Do you think they will put it on Google Video later today to watch afterwards since I can't watch it live? |
Travis Harris | 18 years ago # |
It does not fit in my browser window, and every time I resize the window it goes back.... had to make it so JavaScript can not mess with my windows! (I love FireFox) |
dpneal | 18 years ago # |
might go into google podium http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/podium.html |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
They're scrolling by live (?) searches right now next to a rotating globe :) |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
If anyone wants to run the webcast in a smaller window, go to this link and click on the webcast :-
http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressday.html |
/pd | 18 years ago # |

|
Michael Fagan | 18 years ago # |

Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Yes Pd, I think this thread is great for live comments... |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
This is when that AJAX shoutbox I saw a few days ago would come in handy. |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
I got a it clocked at 1:05 in my window now.. oh btw I am working of twin monitors
|
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
How long is this globe going on for.......?

Stephen | 18 years ago # |
Anyone tried getting their searches to appear on the screen?...probably like winning the lottery :) |
dpneal | 18 years ago # |

Utills | 18 years ago # |

Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |

Stephen | 18 years ago # |
Somebody tell me if Googlers for Jesus makes it. |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
I can spy on slide 2 of the presentation already – but not page 3 or 4! http://www.shareholder.com/common/media/GOOGPR/20060510/20263/s2.jpg?unique=1147278073312 |

Stephen | 18 years ago # |

dpneal | 18 years ago # |
Nice work philipp. How did you manage that? |
/pd | 18 years ago # |

|
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 18 years ago # |

Kirby Witmer | 18 years ago # |

Kirby Witmer | 18 years ago # |

Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
I need to know how to make a detergent Alex. I lost the site the first time ok? |
/pd | 18 years ago # |

Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Who bets the "welcome" is boring? |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 18 years ago # |

dpneal | 18 years ago # |
question answered! |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
its started!! |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
The 10:30 slot sounds like a justification for China and censorship |
Michael Fagan | 18 years ago # |
I doubt the real value of this 'press day,' it's for the largely uninformed press (ah it's starting now)... the only thing we'll probably get is some broad "we're cool" stuff and some very basic product announcment info.
the real stuff goes on in blogs and IM, and people actually talking in person, to regular people that work there |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
I cant read the note from the lawyers..!! |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
thats cool....interactive webcast |
dpneal | 18 years ago # |
music is funky! |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Pd, right-click the slide, copy the image location, and then you can go through the different slides by changing the image file number at the end... |
Travis Harris | 18 years ago # |
The E-mail address for questions is pressday06google.com |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
whats he talking about maships eh ?? thats what google does well!! |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
"Yahoo for example" LOL. |
Travis Harris | 18 years ago # |
Are they trying to keep up gurus out of the DaVinci Code contest? |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
magical moment ?? did you notice he mention travel ? |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Irony – whilst Eric and the gang say how cool Google is...
-- Google breaks! |
Travis Harris | 18 years ago # |
My Firefox Crashed.... I should not have tried to do da vinci at the same time :) |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
yeah, I thought it was only me!! did everyone lose the broadcast too ? |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
I didn't loose the broadcast – but had a few refused Google Searches, and a broken Google module. |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
i had to reload ..missed some conversation |
Travis Harris | 18 years ago # |
it kept telling me that I looked like a suspicious search... no matter what Google service I was using. just had to type in charictors |
Art-One | 18 years ago # |
I'm lookin' forward to your comments on the lunch ;-) |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
I think all of this stuff on "create remember share" stuff is leading up to the GDrive.
He is talking about putting as much things as possible online, so people can share wotever they create and then use search to organise the whole thing. |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
(I got this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/davyson/144089224/) |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
yeah the search tech overview – "kevin delany wsj" ?? who the heck is that ?? :)- |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
http://www.shareholder.com/common/media/GOOGPR/20060510/20263/s14.jpg
lots of his slides are available |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
This guy is doing the lighthouse technique really bad.
What is the "moma"? http://www.shareholder.com/common/media/GOOGPR/20060510/20263/s10.jpg |
Kirby Witmer | 18 years ago # |
yea.. anyhow.. what's moma?? i noticed it..
|
/pd | 18 years ago # |
yes he will talk abou the "Haystack problem" .. and also the news line!! |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
no one clicks "I'm feeling lucky" from crowd |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
who do they estimate that 20-25% search queries ahve never been seend before ?
|
Travis Harris | 18 years ago # |
did I hear that 25% of queries are unique? |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
travis : no not unique... but not been seen before!! |
Travis Harris | 18 years ago # |
what is the difference?
PS... Mr Lenssen at what point will this collapse so I do not have to scroll all the way down? |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
100 comments I think |
Luke Baker | 18 years ago # |
MOMA: http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2006-01-05-n89.html |
Travis Harris | 18 years ago # |
Ha Ha... interpretation : "Do you guys hate everything but search... is that why everything else is down all the time?" |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
I think at 150, at this moment... |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
yeah he is being question on the 20-25% figure!!
|
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Did that guy ask the same question last time round? |
Travis Harris | 18 years ago # |
"We hope to be optimistic" |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
The Wi-fi in their room doesn't work? |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Philipp could you kick it in early for this thread? |
Travis Harris | 18 years ago # |
OR set it to 75 just while it is on |
Kirby Witmer | 18 years ago # |
all i have is a green screen... what's up with that?? |
Andrew Hitchcock | 18 years ago # |
Nice catch Luke.
Also, "Take a picture with your phone, OCR it, and let a search engine tell you who’s the person in it."
Umm, I don't think that would be considered OCR :). |
Kirby Witmer | 18 years ago # |
i can hear it.. but can't see the video.. |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Andrew: That is Riya! |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Yahoo Finance!! Oops! |
Travis Harris | 18 years ago # |
Optical Character Recognition.... daffy duck is a character... Jim Carry is quite a character..... I guess OCR fits! |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |
Optical Charachter Recognition as in" A is a charachter, B is quite a charachter" I think they shouldn't use the same abbv. as this already existing one. it should be Optical Face / Person Recognition |
Travis Harris | 18 years ago # |
20 min break!... THANKS TODD! |
Kirby Witmer | 18 years ago # |
Philipp, what's yahoo.google.com??? |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
My internet connection broke down just now... had to restart!
So, I guess the big announcement is made by Marissa and Jonathan then. |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
Hey Philipp : yeah change the thread!! lock this out and open a fresh one pls
|
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
> Philipp, what's yahoo.google.com???
Ooops... I fixed this to finance.yahoo.com. |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
"“Google Finance” (finance.google.com arrived much later than yahoo.google.com)"
LMAO!
On a serious note: the next presentation is the key one if we are going to get anything new. |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |
can't we chat somewhere :D |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Does anyone know how you fast forward the webcast? I started watching it at work and came home to find I have to start from the beginning! When I click the >> icon, the counter goes up, but when I click the play icon again, it goes back to where I was!!! Grrr... |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
hit the << button -fast rewind |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |
btw i think this is comment number 100 |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
So some predictions before they make the announcement. what do u guys think they will announce?
My thoughts :
- They are talking about sharing content (personal content) across different mediums so some sort of drive like the GDrive could be announced. - They are bigging up the mobile space where they have made a lot of progress and it is possible they offer a much more integrated solution for mobiles that runs mostly locally but uses the web to transfer data. - Google Purchases – A progression of Google Base – Rather than a direct challenge to ebay, something much more service based than product based. |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Hmm, I also had to restart the presentation... what does everyone else see right now? I hear music and see the cover screen. |
Stephen | 18 years ago # |
I think it's the press conference is going really well so far. |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
Yeh a white screen showing "Press Day 2006" with music |
Haochi | 18 years ago # |
Waiting they come back... <{=... Google Press Day- 2006 |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Tony, I think that's just the normal pause screen you're getting then... |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |

Elias KAI | 18 years ago # |

Aside: Google Desktop just release a new version http://googledesktop.blogspot.com/2006/05/say-hello-to-google-gadgets.html |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Looks like it *is* at the beginning for me as I'm still seeing that same slide... :-( |
Reto Meier | 18 years ago # |
Nah, the 'Press Day 2006' slide is still visible. |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
It's continuing... looks like a Google Health commercial... |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
We are all seeing that same slide...they just keep announcing people to take their seats. If you can see the "What google has done for us" you are seeing the latest version |
Reto Meier | 18 years ago # |
And they're back. |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Tony, can you see it now? |
Reto Meier | 18 years ago # |
It's a story about... Health! |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
hmm, rather, looks like a mixed topics commercial... |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Yep – looks like it's back for me... :-) |
Reto Meier | 18 years ago # |
...and back to health :) |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Missed last few bits. What happened?
Google Health official?! |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
LOL. Not yet! |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Where is Gmail on that chart?! |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Look at this...
http://www.shareholder.com/common/media/GOOGPR/20060510/20263/s39.jpg
What an interesting way to show a map of the world. Is Google going to make this a standard? |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Don't think so. Other maps seen today have USA on the left. |
jon | 18 years ago # |
does anyone knows where it is that you can post questions for the Q&A section? |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
jon: Send an email to pressday06google.com |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
It's interesting to hear how they still refer to Google Book Search as "Print". (We do the same thing internally at work too; we call our projects by what you could call their "working titles"...) |
Reto Meier | 18 years ago # |
Looks like the new Google Desktop release is an announcement: http://www.shareholder.com/common/media/GOOGPR/20060510/20263/s47.jpg |
Kirby Witmer | 18 years ago # |
most of it is old stuff.... so far.. |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Taking a peek at future slides...

Pau Tomàs | 18 years ago # |
Google Trends is very fun :) http://www.google.com/trends?q=star+wars%2C+star+trek&ctab=0&date=all&geo=all |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Cool! You can compare searches for Google vs. Yahoo:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=google%2C+yahoo
Yahoo wins!!! |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Like Google Finance without the flash (thank god). Seems pointless though I think. |
Giridhar | 18 years ago # |
3 more launches to go
|
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Pointless? It's invaluable for SEO! You can see which search terms are the most popular and optimize your site for those. You could even optimise your site for different seasons (if you were a shopping site, for example)... |
Haochi | 18 years ago # |
Google Desktop Gadget. |
Giridhar | 18 years ago # |
Google Desktop recommendations sounds cool. |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
New Google Desktop... does anyone use Google Desktop here atm? |

Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Erm, neither http://www.google.com/coop nor http://www.google.com/co-op seem to work yet... |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |
what was it??? she said smth ".com/coop" |
Splasho | 18 years ago # |
Google trends goes back a (perhaps alarmingly) long way! (do they have our IPs too?) |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
That Note thing looks AWESOME! |
Elias KAI | 18 years ago # |
google notebook
|
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Splasho, of course they do! And they know which results you click even if you're not logged in – each one has client-side tracking code attached to it and had done for years! |
/pd | 18 years ago # |

Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Google Notebook?!
http://www.google.com/notebook redirects to http://www.google.com/gn
(Which is currently a 404.) |
Stephen | 18 years ago # |
Woa, notebook may actually increase productivity a lot. Especially compairing things, ebay. And well noting, to come back to. |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
This is Google responding to del.icio.us. And it looks very good. What is this "plugin" though? |
ContentWorth | 18 years ago # |
Google eyes, how appropriate.
I love the Trends, but not that they "watch" everything on the desktop. |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
desktop feastures pages just got updates
http://desktop.google.com/features.html |
jon | 18 years ago # |
holy crap the google earth was my question!!! |
ContentWorth | 18 years ago # |
Real time weather, that's a lot of satellites.
Anyone know whether they addresses the GE ads, whether they are by zip code, IP address, or query? |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Jon, really? It's good to know they're asking real emailed questions and not just engineering them! |
ContentWorth | 18 years ago # |
Search on TV. What a great oppurtunity for marketing. |
jon | 18 years ago # |
yeah, when you told me the email, i emailed them, and bamm it was asked (thanks for sharing the email btw).
concerning too many satellites: if you consider the weather channel, i don't think it would be too hard. |
ContentWorth | 18 years ago # |
Good point Jon |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Did anyone understand Google Co-op + labels? |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
BTW, has anyone else noticed that Google Labs products/services have now got their own style logo like this:
http://labs.google.com/images/labs_logo2.gif
Reader: http://www.google.com/reader Trends: http://www.google.com/trends Related Links: http://www.google.com/relatedlinks/ Mars: http://www.google.com/mars
Is that new or have they just done this? I didn't notice it was like that in Google reader about 60 minutes ago... |
Reto Meier | 18 years ago # |
Has anyone even found coop? |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Scrap that last comment – it's evidentally old news...
http://blogoscoped.com/forum/30685.html
;-) |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
(I'm integrating lots of information here into the main post, so a big thanks to everyone.) |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
I think it's a wise move to switch "Beta" for "Labs" – perhaps there will be no more "Beta" products from Google from now on...? |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
No!! --no Co-op is still fuzzy!!
|
Art-One | 18 years ago # |
Has lunch already started?
|
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
I don't understand Co-op AT ALL. It is something broader than Google Health but how it actually works?! |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Re: Google Co-op
It sounds like they're outsourcing their research in some areas to other companies... or at least that's how I understood it. |
Fabio Kepler | 18 years ago # |
Just got it in my email...
http://groups.google.com/group/GooglePress/browse_thread/thread/b40d2785030fddde/0fffb16288067f06#0fffb16288067f06 |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Tony: No. Not all products that start in Beta start in labs.
e.g. Calendar, Gmail. |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Good point. I wonder how they decide that.
BTW, from the press release:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Google Co-op Beta
Google Co-op beta is a community where users can contribute their knowledge and expertise to improve Google search for everyone. Organizations, businesses, or individuals can label web pages relevant to their areas of expertise or create specialized links to which users can subscribe.
Once a user has subscribed to a provider's content, all of that provider's labels and subscribed links are added to the user's search results for relevant queries. These contributions serve as meta information that helps Google's search algorithms connect users to the most relevant information for their specific query. Users interested in contributing can get started at www.google.com/coop.
For example, a doctor can label web pages related to arthritis, and users who subscribe to that doctor's information will receive options at the top of the results for more specific information such as "treatment," "symptoms," or "for health professionals" when they enter a relevant query.
As a first step, Google has worked with partners to annotate web pages related to health and city guides and to offer dozens of subscribed links to specialized content such as restaurant and movie information. Going forward, the broader online community will begin building out new topic areas and subscribed links to help improve the way people find and discover information online.
Users can subscribe to content and providers at www.google.com/coop/directory. Google Co-op is available today on all English language Google domains including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom
----------------------------------------------------------------
However, at this time http://www.google.com/coop and http://www.google.com/coop/directory are still both dead. |
ContentWorth | 18 years ago # |
So, is Google Co-op a way for sites to gain priority in the organic listings through search results and subscriptions?
That's what it sounded like in this blurb: http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/002033.html |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Note that they are dead in a different way to http://www.google.com/gn (different 404 page).
GOOGLE BLOGOSCOPED!!! |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Wow! It's a question from Google Blogoscoped! ;-) |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
wow...u got a message through! Your famous Mr. Lensenn |
? | 18 years ago # |
so what no google health? |
Kirby Witmer | 18 years ago # |
what was the message? I didn't see it. |
ContentWorth | 18 years ago # |
So Tony Ruscoe Google Coop is like dmoz.org in a sense, only without selected editors, according to the PR? |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |
smile , ur website name was on the video :) |
Elias KAI | 18 years ago # |
famous philipp question about chinese market WOOOOOOOOOOW
COOL , ask them if they heard about my son Google lol |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
They just asked my question: "Do you sometimes have discussions with the Chinese government over specific sites you are requested to censor?"
I did not fully manage to transcribe the answer. It was something like "From time to time, you have conversations about how a law is incorporated." |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
ContentWorth: Yes, I guess it does sound a bit similar to dmoz.org but with labels rather than simply filing the sites into a directory structure... |
Niraj Sanghvi | 18 years ago # |
Cool coverage...trends sounds pretty interesting |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
I am thinking that Notebook is that coolest release today. It could replace del.icio.us couldn't it? It depends exactly how it works. |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |
Larry seems not that exited .. look how quickly he drops the mic down when he's finally finished talking. |
Sander | 18 years ago # |
Do you think Notebook will be ie only? |

Sam: I think Google Notebook sounds like a cross between Search History and the Gmail Drafts folder/label.
It almost sounds as thought it could be like a blog which just contains clippings from various websites... |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
both urls on coop are 404 still |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
The way I understood it was that Google Notebook would be an application... is that not the case? |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Google releases (except Toolbar) are normally Firefox & IE simultaneously. |
Kirby Witmer | 18 years ago # |
Ahh.. finally caught a glimpse of google notebook... :-)
http://www.googlestore.com/product.asp?catid=4&code=GO0016 |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
I think it is a "plugin" for the browser and then a seperate site to edit your notes later.
I am thinking about the notebook in the same way as you I agree completely with "It almost sounds as though it could be like a blog which just contains clippings from various websites...".
You can do this will del.icio.us today (just links though). |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |

iZeitgeist | 18 years ago # |
Will the Google Notebook have unlimited storage ?
Anyone want to take a guess on this one ...
|
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
iZeitgeist – yes I think it will.
In the same way that Blogger does. |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
But where is the value added propoistion for ntoebook ?? We have so manyu link blogs which is like a full note book and shorts links liek del.io.us.
so what is new for the user ? |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Just as Philipp does, it's often useful to use a snippet from a website rather than just a link. I think that Google Notebook will start a whole new debate on copyright issues and fair use! |
Elias KAI | 18 years ago # |
How did we miss it _ ?
well Google Inc just registered googlecoop.com on the 8th of may 2006

I wonder why Google didn't release the Notebook and the Co-op today, it's not of their habits to annonce product release early...
I'm pretty sure those services are ready already.
Google is weird anyhow.
Just musing... |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |
that's being transparent, baby |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
That's my question!
"Do Google have any plans in the near future to integrate their statistical machine translation system with services such as Google News, Gmail, Google Talk and even Google Search? Also, do they have any plans to integrate human translation or proofreading and translation memory into their translation system?" |
jon | 18 years ago # |
so pretty much all of their webcast questions are coming from this forum, which could mean we are the only people who are actually watching this live online. |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |
HEY, Google dude reading us here!! do u see this???? i want gmail for my domain!! |
ContentWorth | 18 years ago # |
Jon, that's what I was thinking. Isn't anyone else interested? This is good stuff (well, the new stuff anyway). |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Sergey: We've probably used the word "Beta" a little bit...
LOL |
viggen | 18 years ago # |
there is already a gmail for your domain https://www.google.com/hosted/
I rather be interested if Orkut is going anywhere or if they decided its a dead horse.. |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
/pd I think that there are two significant things that we will see with Google Notebook (bear in mind that none of us actually know how this thing will work etc):
* It is not actually bookmarking. You it more like saving. Saving whatever you like. It is a definate mashup between Gmail Drafts / Bookmarks as Tony noted. It looks from the UI that they took stuff from Google Pages to me, but whatever I am sure the UI will be slick. You can save pics You can save notes of your own (to dos). You can save links. It is more like one of the newer bookmarking sites (that allow lost of media formats) than del.icio.us I think.
* del.icio.us is popular amongst you and me. And probably everyone reading this entry. Google Notebook may have appeal to other people who are not so technically enabled. Especially if it was integrated into Gmail at sometime (which there seem to be no plans for atm) it would get more people saving snippets and links and images online.
They are my thoughts anyway, I think if it is like I expect it will be really useful and I will probably use it over del.icio.us. It however largely depends on the UI and how the "plugin" works. That will determine its utility. |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Tony: not "used", "abused". |

Philipp in ur post u linked to http://www.google.com/trends/ which doesn't work. Remove the slash at the end. it's: http://www.google.com/trends |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Yes – thank you Philipp & everyone else for the commentary as we went through. Now we can look forward to the ACTUAL launch (as in you can use it) of Google Co-op and Google Notebook.
I think I heard it commented before that doing it this way is "good" marketing. Google get buzz now upon announcing the product. And then more buzz when the product goes live. |
/pd | 18 years ago # |
But Sam, that means they are switching marketing tactic's. This would be the frist range of products that is being luanched like this!! |
Kirby Witmer | 18 years ago # |
maybe they ran into problems, and couldn't get it out in time... |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Thanks Ramibotros, fixed!
Now how long does Google take to fix google.com/coop? They announced the link to the world today... |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
/pd perhaps. I meant they had the same sort of thing (kind of) with Page Creator / Analytics.
It is launched – but there is no sign up (or in this case no site) until later. |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |
http://www.itweek.co.uk/vnunet/news/2155794/google-emphasises-search says in the last paragraph: "The new Google Co-op service includes search results from a list of select partners who for instance list restaurants or information about movies.
The search engine at launch will partner with six sites including Open Table, *Digg*, People magazine, Wine Spectator and Fandango. Partners are included free of charge.
Listing search results provided by qualifying partners will make for more accurate search, Mayer claimed." Did they actually say that? |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |
Anyway we could get the nice review on Digg? Here is my try: http://www.digg.com/technology/Google_Press_Day_2006_Announcements |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Ramibotros, yes I've heard Marissa say "Digg News". Now that there's someone else who heard this, I'll add it to the article... I wasn't 100% sure. |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Dugg! :) |

Now that's a lot of broken links in the official Google blog post on press day: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2006/05/yes-we-are-still-all-about-search.html
Google links to the following URLs which are not found at the moment: http://www.google.com/pressday/ http://www.google.com/coop/ http://www.google.com/notebook http://www.google.com/pressday.html |
Bill Koslosky, MD | 18 years ago # |
I also did some live blogging specifically to hear about Google Health.
They had that video with the young couple and how Google provided them with the correct treatment for their infant...but that was all.

Utills | 18 years ago # |
Google Co-op is not broken anymore...I can see a webpage now |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Weird, I don't see it yet.. what URL are you at Utills? |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Bill, if I understood this right then Google Health will be part of Google Co-op. |
Niraj Sanghvi | 18 years ago # |
I don't see it yet either. |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Nothing here (UK) at:
http://www.google.com/coop or http://www.google.com/co-op |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
This is the URL :
http://www.google.com/coop/
Here is a sample from the site about what they offer :
"Google search covers a wide array of topics. You can contribute to the ones you know best by labeling webpages in those areas. Learn more about topics.
Here are some topics that are currently being developed:
* Destination Guides * Health * Autos * Computer & Video games * Photo & Video equipment * Stereo & Home theater "
Most of the links from the Google Coop page dont work such as Subscriptions, Profile, Topics, etc.
One page that is live is the following page:
http://www.google.com/coop/docs/faq_users.html |
Niraj Sanghvi | 18 years ago # |
Hey, it worked! I had to bang on the refresh button a bunch of times to get it. |
Elias KAI | 18 years ago # |
About Google Health, Marissa said a lot about and we saw several health and hospital logos as part of their google coop.
By The Way Liked Google Trend where you can have as maximum 5 keywords compared by years, regions, cities, languages. |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
I'm in UK, Sam. The site does seem a little bare though. The whole layout seems jittery with only two images, the google logo and the three coloured balls.
Let me take some screenshots before it dies again. |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Philipp: interestingly now -
http://www.google.com/pressday/ is a 404 but without the slash
http://www.google.com/pressday is the right page. |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
I'm not seeing it either. It mustn't be on all servers yet. |
Niraj Sanghvi | 18 years ago # |
The coop is pretty nice...despite the fact that it's quite buggy right now (have to keep refreshing). I tried the subsections for video games: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=wii+more:images_videos&cx=computer_video_games_devel!&sa=N&oi=coopctx&ct=col1&cd=2 |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Yep – hitting refresh a few times seems to work.
Philipp – you got it yet? |
didaio | 18 years ago # |
Coop is worked now, but many pages are still broken :( |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |
http://www.google.com/coop/directory?cx=news this one gives digg |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Nope, /coop is still dead for me... |
Utills | 18 years ago # |
Just keep pressing the refresh button. It seems to work after 5-10 tries. |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Keep refreshing. Switch browsers. It will work eventually.
It is very erratic for me with the stylesheet being implemented pretty hit and miss. |
didaio | 18 years ago # |
Niraj Sanghvi, can you give screenshot? As Co-op works only for some countries. |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Philipp – check your inbox. I've mailed you some screenshots. |

There's a Google Co-op Group – only 2 members at the moment:
http://groups.google.com/group/google-co-op |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Yikes this UI is awkward to use. I have no idea what I am doing but I have subscribed to two feeds (whatever that does). |
Stephen | 18 years ago # |
Anyone sign into their Google Co-op profile yet? Just getting their now. |
Ramibotros | 18 years ago # |
Just saw that the main idea of Coop is to provide "Subscribed Links" (the same way we see "Sponsered Links"). And digg is one of the choices to subscribe to. |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Sam, you're right! I think I need to read the Guides and FAQ before I go any further with this... |
Stephen | 18 years ago # |
Wait, so subscribing is how we see relevant search results (related to the sites we've subscribed too). I don't know which sites are going to be relevant to my search queries, that's Googles job. Is there more to is than that? |
Elias KAI | 18 years ago # |
about Google trends, quite of ...
Try two words in a certain order A, B and then B, A
The results are differents, ... why ? |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Clicking the Google Logo annoyingly takes you to Google.com not to coop home. |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Anyone else finding this Co-op feels pretty rushed? |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
Elias, for example:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=google%2C+yahoo http://www.google.com/trends?q=yahoo%2C+google
The graph at the top appears to be the same, but the bars at the bottom appear to be different. I assume that they are just ordered using the first term entered. Apart from the colors being reversed, the lengths of the bars (i.e. for Paris, France) appear to be the same. |
Tony Ruscoe | 18 years ago # |
BTW, the graphs are dynamic PNGs generated on the fly:
i.e. http://www.google.com/trends/viz?q=google&graph=weekly_img
Look what server they're running:
Server Response: http://www.google.com/trends/viz?q=google&graph=weekly_img HTTP Status Code: HTTP/1.0 200 OK Content-Type: image/png Server: iZeitgeist Frontend Content-Length: 23743 Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 21:48:00 GMT Connection: Keep-Alive
Does this mean it was going to be called iZeitgeist? |
alek | 18 years ago # |
Ditto what Sam Davyson said above – for instance, contact link is broken on this page on item #4: http://www.google.com/coop/docs/faq_users.html The irony is hilarious ... |
didaio | 18 years ago # |
I like Coop! You can compare results with Coop (http://pics.livejournal.com/didaio/pic/000cfhgd) and without (http://www.google.com/search?q=wii), I searched "Wii" for pages about Nintendo Wii. |

Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
> I have no idea what I am doing but I have subscribed ...
Hehehe.. when you can pull THAT off as a company, you've hit the jackpot :)
Good catch on iZeitgeist...
And as for Co-op, I can see it now but when I e.g. subscribe to People magazine and search for [angelina jolie], nothing special happens... I also can't search for [flu] to trigger Google Health. Maybe they're slowly rolling this out? |
didaio | 18 years ago # |
H'm, interested, when Co-op be implemented to Main Google search (from toolbars, Google homepages, etc)? |

Google has not innovated since 1996, when its search was developed. Let's see what they've done since:
Google Pack blows Google Video blows Google Base blows Google Talk blows Google Finance blows Froogle blows Oh wait. Gmail. That was good marketing, I'll grant them that. For an email website. Wow.
|
Utills | 18 years ago # |

Huh, that's weird. No one in Mainland China has searched for "Democracy" in the last three years...
http://www.google.com/trends?q=democracy&ctab=1&date=all&geo=CN |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
On the Google.com front-page right now:
"New! Just launched: Google Trends and the latest Google Desktop."
No mention of Google Co-op, but then again it seems to be mainly targeted at developers (at least the "do something with it" part). |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Does anyone know how to play only a certain part of the webcast? I can play it, but have to start at the beginning... |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Nate, maybe such a search would get blocked by the Chinese gov't before it reaches Google.com servers in the US? |
Philipp Lenssen | 18 years ago # |
Nate – there are also no results for "democracy" when you restrict the search to e.g. Spain. Maybe the numbers of Chinese users searching for an English term is below the treshold Google applies? |
didaio | 18 years ago # |
Definition from "Labs" and "Beta". All products is what developed in labs (http://labs.google.com/) now have "Labs" logo (not beta). Exception is Google Video and WebAccelerator. |

Does the Google Co-Op program remind anyone else of the del.icio.us service?
I don't know how I feel about the notebook, it sounds like they're just taking Apple's "stickies" and making it more annoying.
Good coverage though, I'm glad I came across this. I posted some thoughts about Google's developments and the "Epic 2015" movie at the link below. Maybe the producers of the film were right?

I think Google Notebook is disappointing; I'd expected more / better.
There's too much confusion in between their offerings now, IMHO. There's Blogger and Pages for publishing, there's the whole Bookmarks deal as well, which is pretty much being ignored.
My full list of issues / problems is here: http://www.dhirajgupta.com/Home/tabid/36/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/71/Google-Notebook-sucks.aspx

I think Blogger/Google Pages should be combined somehow. As a single place to create websites. Along with a service like Flickr, (see discussion here.. http://blogoscoped.com/forum/33581.html) to create photo websites/blogs. And then Google notebook which can publish to one of these services. |
