"why have myspace friends"
Because you have friends who use MySpace? That's the only reason I use it anyway. Its far better than using a social network by myself. |
Using all my data in Google Analytics, almost all my "why" questions are unique. Here are some of the geeky ones:
* why did my internet explorer change * why are there 3 shortcuts to the internet explorer 7 i downloaded? * why can't google find my subdomain * why can't i download google video onto my psp * why can't i download movies onto my ipod * why can't i register with facebook * why can't i upload photos from asda to facebook * why did google stock drop today? * why does my google log in welsh instead of english * why doesn't google have easter eggs today? * why everyone uses google * why has the g in google got sweets * why is google all mest up
And some more interesting ones:
* why do 1p and 2p get dirty but 50p doesn't * why do giraffes give birth standing up * why was peter kay a good choice to be used for the john smith's advertisements

"Why is English a universal language? – because it uses ASCII."
I'm not sure if that was a joke. But, the real reason for the popularity of the English world-wide has to do with the fact that English-speaking cultures have for the past few centuries held the vast share of military and economic power in the world, first with the British Empire, and then the USA. ASCII is popular because English is popular, not the reverse. And if your post was a joke, then please pretend my comment was never made. |
Nice concept. And Philipp also ensures that he will get a higher ranking now for al this why questions with this updated post. :-)

Joseph yes, it was a bit of a joke. I am painfully aware that stuff like the lack of certain characters in certain software/ internet contexts comes from the fact that most software contexts originated in the US, where it was just not that big a focus in the beginning. Many to most programming languages special characters for instance are quite hard to type on German keyboards, for instance, where characters like $,< or > are placed differently. If internet and domain names had originated in say, France, I'm sure there would have been workable solutions right from the start for bringing e.g. an é into the name, including good phishing preventions for similar characters etc. And UTF-8 is another case where sometimes, the programming language routines themselves show bugs in handling...

Funny the one "why google is down": if Google is down how could he search for the answer on... Google? :-D
In Italian we have exactly the same saying: "never look a gift horse in the mouth" ("A caval donato non si guarda in bocca"). |
> Funny the one "why google is down": if Google is down > how could he search for the answer on... Google? :-D
Joe and Klaas, the search referrers are not just from Google.com but from all search engines, so it's also possible the person queried on Yahoo, MSN, Ask etc... (though as usual, most of the queries are indeed from Google). |
At uclue.com during September we got these:
why is my stomach distended (3 times) why do people drool? (twice) what are the causes of a bloated stomach (twice) what is the meaning of procreation (twice) what is the meaning of the word quaker (twice) what is the total global energy consumption of the internet? (twice) what is the city income tax for nyc for a 401k withdrawal? (twice) what are the common conditions of bloted stomach (twice) what is the total volume of a 40 feet container (twice) what causes stomach to be bloated why is the stomach bloated why do we have to consume the food before expiration date? what should i eat to reduce my bloated belly
As you can see, bloated stomachs are a recurring theme. There must be a real gap in the market for bloated stomach websites. |

I wonder if it's good for search engine optimization to enter the words "who, what, where, why" and "when" into the footer of a page? This way, you cover all those questions better. Then again, that's blackhat if you just do it for search engines! |
There's an interesting discussion going on at Newsvine.com about this: http://noah.newsvine.com/_news/2007/09/21/977720-a-month-with-google-analytics-or-why-humanity-is-doomed |
