Way back when Google Calendar had just been discovered as "CL2" something else was discovered that has since been forgotten: Google Links. I remember actually being able to access it once but Google disabled it and i never saw it again. You can see what it looked like here: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2006/02/google-links-and-google-calendar.html

What was Google links? Was it the ability to customize those links that we now see at the top of Google's pages? If so, why did it get scrapped? Was it because Google wants to chose the links for us? If so, why not just have a "default" option along with the ability for users who want to be able to, to customize it?
The service was here: http://mail.google.com/mail/?view=barc
