Google.org, Google's philanthropic efforts organization, announced they're rolling out five initiatives http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressrel/20080117_googleorg.html . One of the initiatives Google titles "Predict and Prevent," consisting of improving early warning systems in Southeast Asia and Africa. Google mentions bird flu as one of those critical threats. On another front, Google's non-philanthropic arm is working with the Chinese government to censor information on bird flu: entering both the English [bird flu] as well as the Chinese [禽æµæ„Ÿ] into Google China results in a footer message that translates to: "According to local laws and policies, some search results are not shown." (On the other hand, some good information remains shown in Google.cn – whether or not Chinese surfers will be able to see the pages behind it remains uncertain, as sites themselves may be blocked too.) |
