Don't forget to use Status Code 301 ("permanently moved") when using server language generated redirect pages.

I would say don't let your old domain expire EVER. It's better you have it than domain squatters who will snap it up and cover it with ads.

On that note, Blogoscoped.com never regained the PageRank 7* so far, so I think Google may not treat a permanent redirect truly "equal".

*Let alone PageRank 8, which this blog had for a very short period :)
