Don't forget to use Status Code 301 ("permanently moved") when using server language generated redirect pages.

I would say don't let your old domain expire EVER. It's better you have it than domain squatters who will snap it up and cover it with ads. |
On that note, Blogoscoped.com never regained the PageRank 7* so far, so I think Google may not treat a permanent redirect truly "equal".
*Let alone PageRank 8, which this blog had for a very short period :) |
