Google China is a Google from an entirely different planet.

Is that what was being discussed here: http://blogoscoped.com/forum/130357.html ?

[put at-character here]Tony
I believe so, but I thought it would be something else at first because the Dictionary thingy was widely mentioned in Chinese tech news sites.

>> Google provides web page translation to improve Internet related functionalities in "Jin Shan Ci Ba". The package is 23MB and contains 13 dictionaries and you can adjust the entries of the dictionary after installation.

These dictionaries includes (a couple of Chinese<->English dictionaries), English<->English, Japanese->Chinese and "Google online dictionary (glossary?)" and Google Image Dictionary.

Google will include the dictionary in Google Pack in the near future. <<

I am the one using Kingsoft Powerword in China, and it's quite popular here.

Since the copyright problem of China, Kingsoft maybe the only one survived from the anti-pirate war now.

However, there is no update of the PowerWord for years. The data is quite out now but still huge.

The only reason I keep on using it, is the PowerWord is the only one can be used off-line. Hoping Google won't change this feature.

My Chinese is rusty, but here's a crack at translating that page:

5月8日上线的谷歌新产品,叫“金山词霸”还是“谷歌词霸”?
"The new product to be released on May 8th: is it Gold Mountain PowerWord or Google PowerWord?
正确答案是“谷歌金山词霸”,
The correct answer is Google Golden Mountain PowerWord,
这款新产品是在原金山词霸的基础上进行了一些互联网方面的改进,
a new product based on the original GMPW plus improvements from the Internet,
由谷歌提供了网页翻译等功能,
using Google's website translation functions,
成为一款“新时期新阶段,适合众多中国网民使用习惯”(o(∩_∩)o)的词典产品。
becoming a "new era" for Chinese users using (o(∩_∩)o) from the product.

blah blah blah feature list

5月8日下午两点三十分,谷歌与金山方面将召开新闻发布会正式宣布合作事宜,
On May 8 at 2:30 PM, Google and Gold Mountain will hold a joint press conference announcing a partnership,
并于当天开始提供谷歌金山词霸的公开下载,
and that same day begin to provide the Google-Gold Mountain public download,
谷歌也将在不久的将来在Google Pack软件包中整合其他软件提供下载,
and Google shall soon add to the Google Pack software bundle other programs for download,
请大家拭目以待。:-)
please everybody wait and see. :-)

If you're having problems downloading (I have not tried), you should probably wait another day or so. China is about 16 hours ahead of the U.S.A, so you'll need to wait until almost midnight on the 7th before the press conference is held.

That said, if even a fraction of Chinese users try to download it, we wouldn't have a hope for days to come to get our hands on it.

I'm looking forward to trying it out. My mom would appreciate some better grammar in my letters.

Good move.

JinSanCiBa had great market share and reputation since mid 90s. And Google may provide more intelligence to JinSanCiBa, and borrow the popularity from JinSanCiBa.

Chinese in the mainland China love and hate English language. If Google can release their difficulty in learning English, they will greatly appreciate.

According to Chinese blogger Ilmay (www.ilmay.cn), this product is mostly similar to the successful "Yodao Desktop Dictionary" from Yodao.com, the search site operated by Chinese portal NetEase Inc. Yodao's dictionary was released last September and has reportedly garnered 2 million users. So it looks that Chinese users have shown a large demand for this new wave of Internet-based dictionaries.

Original post: http://www.ilmay.cn/post/google-ciba.html

Let me translate a bit:
"Back to the product itself, from a user perspective, I think Google Kingsoft Dictionary does not bring much pleasant surprise... The main selling point of the product is the integration of Google's search, Internet-based translation and Kingsoft's great dictionary service. However, Google's translation is only good for translating long articles, not really good for short terms or words. The product that really shines at "Internet-based Translation" is the dictionary from Yodao.com, and the desktop client version of it. And it is my favorite dictionary software now... Also, Kingsoft has its own Internet-based dictionary product – Ciba Doudou."
