It's pretty ironic that you can't use the "search our site" option from Google's about page (there's a silly action value in the form):

That's odd, it worked for me. For instance, typing in "search query" on that page and hitting enter led me here: http://www.google.com/search?output=googleabout&sitesearch=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&q=search+query&submit=Search+our+site |
that is action = h t t p : / / / search
