Begins shortley: Updated every half hour: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/05/19/live-notes-from-google-factory-tour-of-search/ |

Tony I just tried the same thing after reading the TechCrunch post, seems to be a few UI glitches in Fx 3 in Google Health though. |
Tony Ruscoe | 16 years ago # |
As usual, lots of dead links and UI bugs. Hasn't this thing been in testing for months now? Who do they get to test it? |
Mambo | 16 years ago # |
I don't like the UI. Having one column of navigation seems like a cop-out – can't they contextualise it, into something that looks more like Google Notebook?
Is this service International? |
Philipp Lenssen | 16 years ago # |
There's no slides showing here. I just see the video and the same Google logo on black background slide 1. Hmm. |
Philipp Lenssen | 16 years ago # |
... and no I can see a slide (named slide 85). Printed at the bottom left of the slide is "Google Confidential". |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 16 years ago # |
No sound here.
(I wonder if they'll launch the updated Universal Search UI). |

Tony Ruscoe | 16 years ago # |
I can navigate directly to all slide IDs right up to 156, which is the current one displaying on the webcast page. Is that right? |
Ariel Erlijman | 16 years ago # |
I can not find the Family History link in the Google Health, and it was in the preview. Any Ideas? |
Philipp Lenssen | 16 years ago # |
Q&A ended now too, so the event is over (at least the webcasted part). |

Now MICROSOFT will have a tour this week
LOL:
In order to get in, you have to add the Facebook app |
Philipp Lenssen | 16 years ago # |
TechCrunch says "APis are n the works" and "Google promises never to advertise on Google Health (although ads in related searches should be fair game)": http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/05/19/google-health-a-quick-peek/
Some other sites note that protections of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) don't apply, per Google's legalese, saying this is an issue: http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=8866 |
Charlie | 16 years ago # |
Just tried Google Health. Very strange being asked for my race. Is this normal in the US? Do people still talk about being of a certain race?
Why not ask for your phrenological head measurements or your star sign? |
Satan | 16 years ago # |
Charlie : Certain races are more resistant / susceptible to certain diseases than others. It's not meant to be racist. |
Charlie | 16 years ago # |
Outside of the US I don't think the word race is really used. I don't really know what it means. I wouldn't know what to say if someone asked me what race I was. |
Satan | 16 years ago # |
Charlie :
You're right, the word "race" is used more in the US than anywhere else and doesn't necessarily carry any negative connotations (although it can in certain circumstances). Here is France it takes on a very pejorative meaning. Those are the only two countries I can speak for.
Speaking solely in the scientific realm, the concept of race is an enormous, contentious generality with questionable value. When it comes to medicine, there may be some benefit in using this generality.
I'm fairly certain that Google means no ill-will. |
Charlie | 16 years ago # |
Satan:
Agree. No ill-will meant but I think they'll need to change this wording if they roll it out worldwide. |
DPic | 16 years ago # |
I'm really satisfied with this actually. I think it works very well |
Voyagerfan5761 | 16 years ago # |
Only complaints so far: The UI is kind of boring (Google Reader-ish would have been nicer), and there aren't any local clinics in the list of supported imports (though the place I go to right now doesn't even have online records access anyway).
Other than those niggling little details, I'm quite excited. Now I have to go get my records to put them in. :D |

Health Data API: http://code.google.com/apis/health/
<< The Google Health Data API allows client applications to view and update Health content in the form of Google Data API feeds. Your client application can use the Health Data API to create new medical records, request a list of medical records, edit or delete existing medical records, and query for medical records that match particular criteria. >> |

Perhaps unrelated due to a different reason for offering the selection, but Google also asks you to make a selection in their jobs page: http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2006-02-09-n61.html https://www.google.com/jobs/application/application?action=add&job=Software%20Engineer%20-%20Mountain%20View |

That's too bad... I thought affirmative action was illegal in California, anyway. |

Now that they are going to be placing ads on Image searches it would be nice for them to removing framing images as well. I've never understood why they can frame an image result and not a text result.
Down with Image Framing!!! |

Stephen Shankland of CNet talked to Marissa Mayer:
<<Google began showing the image ads in the last two weeks to a small subset of users, Mayer said. It's not clear when it will be fully ready, but Mayer estimated 2009.>> http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9947326-7.html
There's also a bigger picture of the image ad sample there.
[Thanks Stephen!] |
Philipp Lenssen | 16 years ago # |
Stephen was nice enough to share his photos with us, depicting the image search ad samples – not sure if the yellow color is just to highlight the ads in the samples or if it's an actual color:

Roger Browne | 16 years ago # |
Hmm ... I bet a lot of people will click on the second example thinking that it's a search result. |
Philipp Lenssen | 16 years ago # |
Via Ionut, now Google has put the slides live (they were not showing in the live cast till 85): http://google.client.shareholder.com/Visitors/event/build2/MediaPresentation.cfm?MediaID=31552&Player=1#

Looking at the slide, it might be just the red border was for the presentation samples, and that the light yellow is used in normal situations:
