I've asked Franz about this project and he gave us a couple of more details:

the google web search API for non javascript environment (i'm currently writing a PHP wrapper for it – will be open source after it's V 1)
plus some tweaks to work around some issues with the API (mostly duplicated results and the 8 results per request limitation).
yes, the quite unknown face parameter is used (with some others, depends on the query) (strangely elephant feets also turn up form time to time, so i'm excluding results of elephant feets..... seems that elephant feets have the same shadow pattern as faces)

a tweaked version of the http://blog.deensoft.com/2008/03/10/protoflow-first-preview-release/ protflow software is used which is allready quite a good piece of code (plus some more scriptacolous and prototype)>>
