Google has created a special Google Group for Youtube at http://groups.google.com/group/youtube-help
Youtube calls it a forum, not a group: "New YouTube Community Help Forums" http://www.youtube.com/blog?entry=cIPhPJY2wE4
It seems to be some kind of a new version of Google Groups. It's more integrated into the existing Youtube design like a iframe, although not utilizing all wide of my screen. You can't either choose your group nickname, you must use your Youtube user name. The first time when you join the group it's not enough to be logged in to Google, you must also log in to Youtube so Google can make the association between the Google account and Youtube account user name.
Is Google Groups coming to other applications like Google Apps and Google Sites like many has wished for a long time? Google Sites saves already now all uploaded files at the domain googlegroups.com. Ex site http://sites.google.com/a/jotspot.com/sample-family/Home where the family picture is stored at http://3326858609601106140-a-jotspot-com-s-sites.googlegroups.com/a/jotspot.com/sample-family/Home/photo.png |
I think they've just hacked the standard groups template to make it look more like YouTube (it's not using an iframe). The functionality and URL syntax is pretty much identical to Google Groups (with the exception of needing to be signed in to YouTube, of course).
On a related note, the Google.com Google Apps account already has a login page for the "groups2" service which could mean it's coming to Google Apps:
https://www.google.com/a/google.com/ServiceLogin?service=groups2
For comparison, this is what you get for other domains:
https://www.google.com/a/blogoscoped.com/ServiceLogin?service=groups2
FYI – Google also uses a modified version of Google Groups with Google Finance. |

I noticed that Google finance now has choosen my Youtube username, and I can't change it to what I use on ordinary Google groups. https://www.google.com/accounts/ManageAccount doesn't show any trace of my Youtube username...
Google Sites file url can be simplified to http://-s-sites.googlegroups.com/a/jotspot.com/sample-family/Home/photo.png for the actual Jotspot family site.
