Programatically searching google

Hello,
My apologies if this is a silly question. I'm very new to this.

Obviously, searching for a term in google is simple
enough. I type it in and the result follows.

But is there a way to
search for "term" programatically using google/any other major search engline, i.e. call upon the
google search results within a program that I write?

There's different ways. One is the Google SOAP Search API, but it's discontinued for new sign-ups. A kind of replacement for that is the REST API: http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2008-04-09-n26.html
Also, you can screenscrape Google results, as shown on that page, or use the Google AJAX API on the client-side:
http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/
