I don't seem to be able to get more than 57 results using Google's Search API:

In fact:
http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/services/search/web?v=1.0&q=hello&start=56

returns some results but

http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/services/search/web?v=1.0&q=hello&start=57

returns "out of range start"

Would anyone know any work around besides screen scrapping which will be blocked for my application?

As a side question a phrase search returns a "Bad Request":
http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/services/search/web?q="hello%20world"

Any reason why?
