Firefox 3.5's support of the Open Video standard allows videos to be embedded with a tag (hooray HTML 5!). Dailymotion is launching a platform to use this and display videos in ogg theora!
http://blog.dailymotion.com/2009/05/27/watch-videowithout-flash/ Why does non-Flash video playback matter? It’s both technical and philosophical, but to make long story short, it will allow us to do new, fun things with video. Some examples are on our demo page [http://www.dailymotion.com/openvideodemo]. Ultimately, we expect this to enable innovation in user experience, SEO, advertising, etc. For more on the value of open video, read the article here [http://www.0xdeadbeef.com/weblog/?p=977].
I wait for YouTube to follow.
In other things Flash is good for, SVG can do quite nicely. http://doctormo.wordpress.com/2009/05/20/who-needs-flash-i-dont-svg-for-me/ |
P.S. As far as video quality goes-- ogg theora has improved a LOT lately and i can't notice a difference in quality. In fact, in objective quality, it's better than H.264 http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/05/07/2352203 |
I'm not sure since when, but YouTube has a demo for HTML 5 but it does not use Ogg Theora (yet?) =[ http://www.youtube.com/html5
